Beresford TC-7510 DAC MKII

The headphone amp in the 7510 sounds pretty bad to me. A decent dedicated amp is a must to enjoy the 7510 fully.

Well, YMMV of course, but using my 200GBP (about $400 these days) Sony MDR-CD1700 headphones I think the Beresford sounds excellent.

If you're getting the Beresford DAC anyway, do try the headphone socket before you invest possibly unnecessary money in a dedicated headphone amp.

Which MK have you got?
All in all, I do agree that the LINE out is far superior. The headphone side seemed to have been an addition for the occasional user. I hope they redesign it one day so we can have a headphone section that can stand its own against a stand-alone headphone amp.
Mind you, I came up with my own mod to increase the headphone bass and reduce the O/P IC noise. It needs a bit more tweaking before I am happy to post details and pics. You can't use it above 60% of volume control rotation due to gain fold back in my modified feedback loop of the headphone O/P IC, but die-hards can PM me if they are desperate.

I have MK 2. It is not as good as my Doge 6210 / LD Micro Tube.

I would stake money on it that the price difference between the two headphone circuits would be a VERY large one. So it's unfair to expect the same sort of sound. It's a miracle that the DAC section is at least top notch.
Mind you, considering how the TC-7510 has improved from the MKI to the MKIII I sure hope the headphone section will see the same sort of changes. I do a lot of headphone listening and can do with some changes on the HP side.

The Zhaolu is as far as the LINE out is concerned, in a far lower camp than the Beresford. You sure you want to endure ridicule? I haven't tried the zapfilter, but I am all for a sound-off. I have stacked my TC-7510 up against far more expensive DACs form friends. They are in awe.

A shootout with someone from my area would end all questions as to which is the king of budget DACs. My Zhaolu is modded though, so it would be best to compare against a modded Beresford. The Zhaolu has also beaten far more expensive DACs with a few simple mods. Let the games begin!

If I remember correctly, several people have lined the Beresford up against other and far more expensive DACs. Some even tried high-end CD players. The Beresford walked away with the trophy. Nelda could find little between his high-end tubed DAC and the Beresford. Do you seriously think that the Chinese designed Zhaolu can compete against the British designed Beresford? This is the land of Linn, Niam,Mission,Meridian, Quad, KEF, and now the Beresford. The Brits are coming. Be afraid: be very afraid

Oh yeah? well our modded Zhaolu has taken the scalps of the Lavry DA10, Benchmark DAC1, Apogee MiniDAC, and a trusted friend of mine even said he prefered it to his Meridian G08!

Hopefully that will happen soon... I'm kinda still in between the Zhaolu 2.5A (with amp upgrade) and the TC-7510 MK3. The DAC-AH is also an option.

I guess I won't know which to buy until someone comes along who has two, or all three. Hopefully that will happen soon.

Based on the design differences between the Zhaolu and the Beresford, you can expect the Beresford to be more analogue-sounding while the Zhaolu will be more detailed. I never heard the Beresford but I can guess how it sounds like by its design. So take your pick on whether you want that analogue sound or more detail.

I will be getting the US version soon, in 2 days. I had few DAC in recent past so I can do some opinionated review when I get it and burned in for about 200hours.

It might be more of a challenge to mod the beresford, because the most of the info has been scratched out off the surface of the chips. Capacitor swaps should be easy enough though.
