currently i own a dvp642, entech 203.2 dac, little dot 2+ amp, and grado sr80 cans. I want to build a speaker system, probably using the same source and dac. i don't know what my budget is, exactly, but i'd probably be wiling to spend around 400. what are my options? thanks.

Do you want surround sound or is stereo an option? You'll probably get more for your money with a stereo integrated amplifier.

How about the Pioneer Elite A-35R integrated amplifier ($200) and a pair of AV123 x-ls series bookshelf speakers ($213)?

Both are well-reviewed.

would it be impractical to use my existing dac and just buy a separate headphone amp? are there amps that are designed to just drive 2 speakers?

Basic Speaker System

You may want to consider a powered multimedia system with a sub/amp and two satellites. For example, Cambridge Soundworks used to sell a Megaworks system with 150w 8'' sub including 2 x 60w satellite amps and various satellite speakers. Klipsch ProMedia is similar.

Headphone amplifiers don't work for speakers. Integrated amplifiers like the one I mentioned are specifically used to drive two speakers.

joe_cool's suggestion to buy a set of computer speakers might be a good one if you're unsure whether or not you'll like the speaker world.

Computer speakers come with a built-in amp, so it would combine both of your needs. I'll throw out a recommendation for a used Boston Acoustics MediaTheater system, since those can be found for well under $100 (ex. link on eBay).

Many Chinese amps work for both headphones and speakers. I am very happy with my Dared MP-5. Dared MP-5 has a hiss when used with headphones, but tube rolling can make it weaker. For this reason, Little Dot III might be better. At least nobody complained about its headamp part here. If you do not mind use seperate speaker amp and headphone amp, you can find a tube speaker amp for about $200. Many CircuitCity receivers are cheaper than that, but I do not want to recommend them. Sonic T-amp has great review here, which is also a $30 speaker amp. It has better resale value, so even if you do not want it, you can sell it pretty quick.

For speakers, eBay has many great deals. Normally their BIN price is 50% off the list price for a NEW pair. Please pay attention to the description and see clear if they are sold individually. I am setting up my speaker system. I know the hassle.

At last, do not forget speaker cables, which can go very expensive. I asked for suggestion several days ago. Many head-fiers gave strong recommendation for Blue Jeans Cable speaker cables. I am going to get a pair. I also have signal cable ultra. They are great.
