I don't think it's gimmicky at all. Obviously the sports package is a freebie to just demonstrate the controls and won't be used once you purchase real sports titles but even with this sports package, the movements are so real. You do a full golf swing, punching in boxing, swinging in tennis and baseball. It's very believable and fun. I can see having a few people over, a pitcher of beer, and playing a few rounds of bowling.

It got some other features that looked like it was geared more towards kids but is actually kind of cool. You make a character of yourself that's in the fun Nintendo cartoon look. These characters are then used in the sport package and I guess other Nintendo brand games. It saves your skill level for each character and can also save it on the remote so if you go to a friends house that has wii, you now have brought your player info on the remote. So if you want to go bowling, you don't have to create a new character. You can also have them travel through the internet to share characters too. Haven't had a chance to try either of these features yet.

You can also buy older Nintendo games that work with the remote. Some won't work with the remote, so you'd also need to a get classic controller or a game cube controller. I might get Donkey Kong and Super Mario World. The wii also communicates with the DS but I'm not sure what it does. We are planning to get one for Christmas.

Edit: it does have surround sound.

Thanks, that helps. I should have specified good surround sound, Pro Logic kinda sucks imo.

I just got home and am about to set it up. I'll give my impressions soon. (I'm too old to be this excited about a video game console, but I am)

Oh, and BTW, I picked up Zelda and Red Steel...I wanted Monkey Ball but they didn't have it.

I'm curious has anyone played Zelda yet? How does it compare with ocarina of time, I thought that game was amazing. The game I'm waiting for impressions would be Super Smash Brothers Brawl though, that looks really good. Would anyone care to post photos?

I got Zelda today. I haven't spent much time with it and haven't played Zelda since N64. So far it looks like it going to be a great game. I haven't really had to use the remote other than press a button and feel the force feedback but it should come in use later with the sword and other weapons.

I also got Super Monkey Ball and Red Steel. I haven't tried Red Steel yet but Super Monkey Ball is very fun. The remote works great for the control of the main game. I tried a few of the mini games and had some trouble figuring out what to do and getting a little frustrated. I never played the previous Monkey Ball games but it reminds me of Sonic crossed with Marble Madness.

We've been getting the place ready for the holiday, so game play has been very limited. I also was hoping to pick up another remote but they were completely sold out this morning. Hopefully they'll restock before Thursday so we can try multi-player with everyone over.

Anyway, I really believe the wii is off the great start and has so much potential to find new ways to use the remote the Nintendo never imagined. Hopefully I'm not over hyping the whole thing but I think most will find it very fun. I'm sure hard core gamers will still end up owning the 360 or PS3 since this isn't going to give the graphics or sound they want.

I didn't buy a cube but this system looks cool. I play most games on the PC but I might buy one of these for fun.

I have the Gamecube and have always preferred Nintendo games. I actually had no intention of getting the Wii. But after looking in to it a little it looks like so much fun.

I will most likely get one. The fact that the gamecube controllers will work is a big help too. I have 4 that I don't want to go to waste.

I waited 12 hours outside of Target to get one at 8am this morning. I was #22 in line for 81 units. I could have gotten there maybe 6 hours later, but I would have spent the time worrying about not getting one, considering I called at 6 asking about lines and the guy said they had started lining up a couple hours beforehand. The Best Buy across the street had 102 units and had over 100 people lined up by 6pm yesterday. I'm pretty sure for most areas, even though there were many more consoles available, the Wii sold out just as fast as the PS3, and from what I have heard, more shipments are coming in as early as Friday. Also, when they passed out tickets at 7am this morning at Target, a substantial amount of people were turned away that had been there for a few hours or better.

I bought Zelda, Madden 2007, and Rayman Raving Rabbids. The Wii Sports pack-in game is amazing. I didn't expect to have as much fun with it as I have, but I think it is superb. I absolutely love tennis, bowling, and boxing. Madden is great, I haven't played a full game yet, and the offensive controls are very intuitive and fun to use, but I am not fully used to the defensive controls yet. Rayman is extremely fun, the minigames are awesome and I can't wait to play it with some friends. I only played maybe 5 minutes of Zelda when I realized I didn't have much time to play so I decided I would save this massive undertaking for another day. The game looks amazing and I got goosebumps looking at the intro and everything.

I just got done playing mine, I guess the family got together and bought one for my brother and I..

I played the sports game with my two brothers and sister..actually even my mom came in and later my dad.
I never had so much fun playing a video game with my whole family..almost like when we were all small playing the nes system..wow.

the fighting game will give you a work out, my basement smells like a jym now from all the sweat.

I am not a big gamer but the sports game with this controller is amazing, my arms tomorrow are going to be very very very sore

i still am sweating...I think nintendo did the rite move on the wii

America might become a whole lot slimmer if more people buy the Wii then, huh?

I am not getting a wii until I can walk out the corruption and brawl.

Its yet to be seen if it will last, but the first reviews of this thing are amazing- everyone says its fun; everyone says its immersive; everyone says non gamers love it. Wow- this is exactly what Nintendo had hoped- the stale (IMHO) video game world could really use something like this. Like I said above, I have more or less grown into a very casual gamer, but I am sold on this thing. I wish I could get ahold of one for Thanksgiving weekend with the family.

Yeah, I dropped out of gaming after N64 and the original playstation. I was also playing some pc games back then too. My wife started working for a gaming software company and we figured we needed to get back into it to see what the current gaming market is like. The wii looked like the most fun for a non-gamer and she was able to get one through work. So far all the games are very fun and very interactive.

As a said in another post, I tried boxing on the 360, and was bored with it after 10 minutes because it was still a button mashing game with just amazing graphics. Amazing graphics don't make the game. I find a lot of the classic games with terrible graphics to be more fun. The wii is focused on fun game play and will bring out the kid in you like when you first played Donkey Kong or Pacman.

I've become a casual gamer as time has gone on too. Plus I've never really been able to get into console games that well due to the problems of using a controller - it just never seems as fluid or as easy to me as using a mouse/keyboard for games like real time strategy or first person shooters.

In fact I've just spent 5 hours round at a mates house playing co-op of Gears of War and as great as the game looks & plays I still feel that it's let down somewhat by being made for a controller.

Now what I've seen of the Wii makes me very interested - it looks like the kind of thing I can pick up and have a blast on for 30-45 mins when I've got some spare time and looks really fun .. which is all that it's about when it comes to it.

Fancy graphics may look brilliant but Tetris never needed any for a highly addictive and fun game.

Actually the wii sports tells you to take a break after you've been playing for a while. Because you're so involved, it is the kind of system you play for half hour or so and take a break. Zelda was the only one I could see sitting down for a much longer time since it's the most traditional game so far. I think once I get into the action part, I may think differently. But yeah, I see the wii as a casual system to play from time to time and especially for having people over.
