Has anyone bought phones (AKG K701 in particular) from Thomann in Germany - their prices are about best in the world but how are they to deal with ?

Thanks for any advice.

I got my wah pedal off them, and i have a couple of friends who've ordered guitars off em, they are very good to deal with, amazing prices and good delivery prices too, i wouldn't be worried in the least about ordering headphones from them. I'm in Ireland by the way.

You might have done me a big favour there, jirams ... that's a great price on the 701s, and am I right in thinking that there's no customs charge or duty within the EU?

If the delivery address is in a member EU country then the duty has been collected by Thomann so there would be no more to pay

In that case I feel the balance tipping away from the HD 650s ... I must take a breather to ensure that I'm not making the decision based on price alone.

Good point - take your time. I have/had HD600 but want a change rather than going up to HD650. I am sure you would not be disappointed by either.

I've ordered a package of foamies for my SF5 and hat nothing to complain.

Ok, they sent it in a really huge package for such little things, but that wasn't really a problem

Hey jirams, good tip, as their prices are "un-European"!

Within Germany Thomann is amazing-- not only dirt cheap prices, but no shipping on an order over 25 euros and when I placed an order, I received everything well packed in something like 20 hours. I couldn't believe it had actually arrived so soon. A solid operation.

This sounds promising; I've been trying to get them for a decent price in the UK. However, I'm assuming I'm going to be hit in the face with the 17.5% VAT if I get it shipped to the UK.

edit: Just had a look through the FAQ on the Thomann website. From what I can tell, you still have to pay VAT which varies depending on which EU country you live in. Clicky.

If you look more closely, you'll find that the prices on the UK Thomann Cyberstore already include VAT

Wow I'm happy to be wrong on that one. I think I'm going to pull the trigger on these headphones quite soon.

I'm now convinced head-fi is part of elaborate conspiracy put together by the headphone industry to make us spend more or our hard-earned cash.

Ive only had great experience with Thomann. Also they stand behind their 30day money-back guarantee. I once sent back an active pair of studio monitors after trying them out at my place for 3-4 weeks, got all of my money back quickly, no questions asked. Great service for sure.
