i'll try that next, when i get home. for some reason, it has stopped giving me access to the repair console, saying that my administrator password is wrong (i don't even have one!).

i'll call apple tech support... i've heard they're much less lousy than microsoft (or freakin' Gateway... from whom i'll NEVER buy anything again... but that's a different story).

Mine was due to HDD failure (Scans reported irrepairable disk errors, formating didn't help, I got it warranty replaced).

i'm pretty sure it's not irreparable. if all else fails, i'm going to see if tech support here at work can slave my computer and purge any problems that way.
p.s. this is the first time i'm using head-fi's new multi-quote feature... totally bitchin!
