Got the Musical Fidelity X-10 V3 Tube Buffer Night & Day Improvement in CD Sound!!!!! - Page 3

Is it worth using one of these with a computer-as-source rig (eg out of a DAC) just to get a tubey sound?

I agree....I have modded older X10 (with Russian tubes) with X-PSU hooked up to my speaker system and it gives more body and weight than the modded X-10V3 with my maxed M^3 amp.

I quote from recent correspondence with a UK audiophile:

"Impression's were more attack, faster, better separation, huge big wide soundstage, sound completely out the speakers, low level detail much more easily detected, although playing very familiar cd's I heard sound's I hadn't hitherto heard and this was only after four hours running I think after the 100 burn in my brain will probably explode what a fantastic performance I couldn't praise it high enough and would most thoroughly endorse it to anyone."

That's how I am using it for both my headphone system (Mac iTunes) and speaker system (via Airport Express --> Monarchy DIP --> Ack Dack 1.2e--> X10 with X-PSU--> ImpAmp --> Speakers)

Will pay more careful attention next time

You can get a used older X10 for less than $150 and used X10V3 for about $250...modding is easy and the sound difference is worth every penny for me Design wise, older X10 has advantage of tube rolling...the new ones are solder to the board.

Original X-10D is more responsive to mods. X-10 V3 can be a prima Donna.

MF X-10V3 Mods

A year ago I was introduced to the MF X-10V3 and like all the others I was most impressed in the sound improvement from my cd player,Pink Litaural considered to have very good performance.
A few months ago I was introduced to an alternative transformer "Little Pinkie" from Rock Grotto and was completely amazed at the sound quality improvement over the standard as supplied by MF this caused me to further check out the Rock Grotto web site and found they could also supply a capacitor and diode upgrade kit for the MF X-10V3.
I have now finished installing the upgrade which was very easy to do from the supplied drawings also what made component orientation easy was one connection had been cut shorter than the other on the capacitors if you can plug in a soldering iron then you could do this mod.
Impressions although it is stated a burn in tim of aprroximately 100 hours is suggested for full benfit I found after four hous I could easily detect improvements. It changes a really good component from a good one to an outstanding one anyone with one of these who doesn't fit this mod is doing themselves a diservice.I've reached aproximatel fifty hous running improvements are more attack the system is faster better seperation a huge big soundstage the sound is completely out the speakers low level detail much more clearer and it is still improving.
This is one mod I cant praise high enough I'm considering buying another MF X-10V3 to place between my pre-amp and power.

6112 .. twin hi mu triode . 8DG. h: 6.3v, 0.3a ....Rk=820 mu=70 p: 150v, 1.7ma gm=2500 .. Rp=28k Pdmax=0.55w
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 6112 and 6112WA are available from a number of different manufacturers in a nos situation. Tube rolling may net some interesting results in the fact that different manufacturing, engineering solutions, material used ect. can all contribute to a sound change in this tube. The 6112 tube was originally developed for military use, way back when.

Why not just use a good tube amp?

How can adding a device to the signal chain after the source improve detail? The source creates the detail, and from then on you just hope the the remainder of your components (preamp, amp, speakers... buffer) dont lose some of that detail.

The only way that i can think that it could appear to improve detail is if it amplifiers some frequency ranges higher than others.......... but this would only work if your system currently has a flaw in that range. on other systems it'd sound like ass surely

Bah! There are always cool near-equivalents to try.
