Darth's comparison

Hey guys,

I have gone through the stock DT770's 03 80ohm and 4 versions of Darth's. Here is what I think of the 4 versions and the stock cans...

V4: I prefer those over any of the other types. Mainly because they are more energic sounding, the bass is thunderous, the mids are ripping, my cans of choice!

V3 extra deep: To me they are more balanced, not as colored in the mids. I feel the soundstage/presentation is improved over v3, instruments separation is better! Bass quantity is excellent but not as much as V3.

V3 closed: Bass extends in the mids a bit, pretty close to the V3XD but with less clarity (in the mids/bass) and more aggressive sounding. Both the V3 and V3XD isolate very well with leather pads. More bassy than V3 extra deep.

V3 opened: To me they are more live sounding, like when you go to a concert. The soundstage is really wide but different compared to the two other versions. The bass is not as defined or tight as the V3/V3XD, it gets in the mids, vocals seems less present or forward. Overall they sound more bassy but more bloated, not as punchy as the other two. I prefer velour with them.

DT770 pro 80 ohm: Prior my Darth purchase I really liked my stock 770's but after listening to the modded version, they fade away. When switching from one to the other I felt the 770's sounded much more laid back, thin/flat (no kidding). The bass is much more impactful and speaker like. I also feel the mids are more present and way more forward on the Darth's. The treble was bright and grainy. The sound signature remains on the Darth's but the stock and modded version are night and day.

Considering the amping on Darth's I would say solid state being better with the V3-O. For the other two I have not tried tubes, but I feel like the V3XD would respond greatly with them.

Charles

Thanks for those thoughts. I'd like to get some deeps too but they cost too damn much.

Charles, those are very accurate descriptions IMO. Nicely done. No doubt the Deep Cup Darths are the jewel of the crown

Life is great! Just bought the DEAL 11
I'll upload some pictures once it arrives.
It's gonna be awesome together with the Corda Opera I recently bought from Skylab
A matching stand will be made by Larry, he'll ship it once he's done with it. So I've got myself a good reason to show off my headphones again in about 3 months :P

I see this is your second post. If this is your first Head-Fi equipment you're off to an amazing start! Congrats on your new Darths - the two-tone looks great!

See...your wallets hurting already...

Yeah, I'm into head-fi for about 2 months now. Started off with a DT990Pro, powered by a Corda Arietta. Upgraded the DT990Pro to a DT990 600Ohm. Then The Arietta to the Opera. I still have all the equipment, so I'll sell the DT990/600 and the Arietta soon, I guess (really got to get some of my money back ) . DT990Pro is staying, because imo it sounds great together with a cheap Philips home-cinema receiver (LX600) from my parents, while watching/listening to stuff like headbangers ball.
So I'm off to a great start, but a very painfull one for my wallet. Needless to say, I think (I hope) I don't have to buy anything else in the near future.

DEAL 11 was $1095. 10 was $695 if I remember correctly. I emailed Larry the very second DEAL 11 became available, so it's no miracle you missed them
It was about 10PM here, local time, so I was very lucky Larry didn't take a few more hours to determine the price, because then I would've been asleep.

I've got to admit to being a little bit shocked. Checked his page this AM and had the impression nothing would change at least until tomorrow. You guys are really alert. Enjoy, as I know you will.

I'd checked the site about 2 hours ago, but wouldn't have paid that kind of $$ anyhow. Look great, but not in the same class as an ED9, which has been available (at least here in the States) for about the same amount of $$.

I just had to have deep darths. I find the comfort of Beyers superb, I think more comfortable than an Ultrasone Ed 9 (can't say for sure, never had the chance to put one on my head). And I also dislike the looks of the Ed 9. That, and I just love how Beyers sound, what can I say? No regrets that I bought them. Wouldn't be too good if I did...

Referring to Deep Cup Darth Beyers, I prefer them to the Ed 9. Have you actually heard both?

so guys what is your stance on using products (wax etc) on your beautiful conversation pieces?

I tried a bit of polish on mine, the texture was super smooth but they became too shiny for me. But they caught the attention a couple of friends fell in love with them until they heard how much they cost haha.

We spent quite a bit on these bespoke products, nice idea to treat the luxurious woods or no?

huh? new 770s out?

any carnauba (paste) wax does fine - any time you get a new pair of Darths...it's time to wax your older pair

No, these are the '05 version. There's also a '03 version, but Larry doesn't use them anymore, because Beyerdynamic only sends him the '05 these days.

(correct me if I'm wrong)
