Phones : Beyerdynamic DT770 250 ohm
Amp : Creek OBH-11
Cable : Markertek SC6RR to Radioshack gold plated RCA->Mini Converter
Source : Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card
Since there haven't really been any posts on this cable adapted for use in a Mini->RCA application I thought I'd post my thoughts so far.
Attempts to sort out a custom cable from Markertek fell short. Initially they faxed me back specs on a custom cable but stopped responding after I stated that I wanted the Canare L-4E6S star quad to be used and not a different shielded cable that Canare makes. My reason for wanting to stick with the Star Quad was because I know from other people's thoughts that it is a good cable for the money.
Noticeable improvements in stereo separation & positioning (especially noticeable in electronic music with a lot of spatial effects or channel to channel sound movement). JML's earlier comments on the Markertek mini-mini sounding almost "holographic" is also evident in the RCA-RCA version of the cable. In agreement with this review, I find that on my setup the high's are now 'just right' - toned down a bit from before with a Radioshack cable. It bears mentioning that I find I'm a bit more sensitive to high end frequencies sound harsh than most. The result with the Beyerdynamics & Creek amp is that everything sounds better balanced than before. Bass seems a bit tighter / less boomy than on the Radioshack (non gold plated) RCA->Mini I was using, but I know that tightening up the sound from Radioshack's offerings isn't necessarily saying much. Sounds overall seems a bit cleaner. All in all, I consider this money well spent if you're like me and want to step up to some quality cables, but can't yet justify buying costlier existing Mini-RCA solutions or higher end RCA cables that cost as much as your components.
