WooAudio 4 Impressions (pics) - Page 2

Woo6 or Woo3

I am posting this here as I saw the reference that the Woo4 mentioned here has a similar sound signiture to the Woo6, the Woo6 being in my price range.

I am interested in my first desktop amp for listening primarily to vinyl out of a tube phono pre, although I will also be listening to a Redwine modded iPod Photo as well -- driving Sennheiser 580HD. I want what I associate from the past (in the 90s, Audio Research pre Sp 10 or 12 driving full speaker system) as a good warm tube sound, but not syrupy.

So I want a classic tube sound, but good, not bloated. Anyone have an opinion if I would be better off with the Woo3, reportedly to have more of a tube sound or the Woo6?

If this is OT for this thread you can PM me.

Thanks

The WA3 will provide that sound with the HD580's - it excells with Senns - especially with the right tubes (7236, or 5998 with the stock JAN Phillips 6922's, or the Russian 6H23N-EB's). This combination provides fast, tight, extended bass, warm mids, and shimmering highs with 3D soundstage and lots of drive and dynamics. It is less impressive with Grados. You'll be very pleased and surprised.

I have always wanted to buy this amp.

Nearly did once.

Nice review LeChuck.

So shinny... this thing is beautiful. How much does it weight again? Those transformers look like beasts.

Clocks in at 30lbs, but that might be a conservative estimate.

Why are there so many tubes (2 power and then 2 drivers for each channel)?

I have asked Wei this question before, he told me that 2 pieces of 6922 are audio signal gain tubes, 2 pieces of ECC82 are drive tubes, and 2 pieces of 6c19 are power tubes.

Thanks for the nice review LeChuck. I am interested in getting a Woo amp, and this looks like it would be great, but it's a little bit pricey for me. I'm also going to check out his WooAudio6 and see if I can come to a conclusion.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the review! I really enjoy Woo Audio products and if I ever get an other tube amp, it will be another Woo design. I can't say enough good things about my WA6. Good luck and enjoy the music!

Sorry to bring up such an old thread, but looking at this amp, it really a monster (30 lbs!).

Are there any new owners who would like to give any feedback about this amp?

I mean, it is nearly twice the weight of the WA2, and has an individual power supply transformer per channel- does this imply that it would trump the WA2, or is the extra transformer for the speaker output?

Thanks!
