what i've found the amp really excells at is portraying the speed and decay of drums.... which is more realistic than i've ever heard it before.
This is what I wrote in the Zana Deux Owners thread in post 229, "I was listenig to some Art Blakey drum solos last night and the sound of the drums is so realistic."

I have mine connected to a monster powerbar using a Synergistic Research Master A/C Coupler power cord. I haven't tried it directly into the wall.

i'll probably try the wall thing later tonight.. since there is one socket i'm not using anyways.

how are you finding the treble?

go directly into the wall particualrly in passages with large dynamic swings, power bars can really choke off the dynamics in these areas.

I have found that a purfifier of the AC can have negative effects and collapse the soundstage unless well done. I built a 2K filter using a specially designed toroidal transformer that works great with my mono amps and dac but as always with an purification my preamp that I built that uses a ps that is large as some amps, closes down some and is not as clean sounding. I like the filter I built but it is heavy and it can not be assumed, even if expensive, which mine is even though I built it, that it will work in all cases.

I listened to Sketches of Spain last night and my ears didn't bleed. The highs seem to be right. The amp has a nice balance.

Or use a power conditioner that does not limit the current in any way. Shunyata is one maker, but there are others as well. Depending on your wall power, you may not need anything but some places really do.

Zana deux and the grado experience

I finally got some HF1's to try out with the Zana Deux.

I've been playing jazz on this thing for a while now- and the experience is simply incredible. The Bass is the first thing i want to note- every single pluck, every deep note played comes out with vivacy and authority (unlike the last time i heard the HF1). trumpets are still a little shrill- i don't think this could be fixed on grados- they just suck at brass insturments. still, it's been very enjoyalbe listening to Miles davis solos on this.
what got me the most was the simple portrayal of the marimba and clarinet by the zana deux- everything is fast, everything decay is perfect, every hit is authoritative.
the soundstaging was pretty good- more than i thought the HF1 could ever produce, on one recording the live audience seemed to expand forever in all directions.

I haven't noticed anything shrill with the HP-2. I wonder if it's just a matter of moving up the Grado line. I haven't tried RS-1's yet but Craig has told me that he felt it was one of the better combinations. I agree that the ss with Grados seems to improve with the ZD.

i should have said it earlier- i've heard just about every grado and never really liked any of them... so i doubt there is anything that could be done about it.
my point was that the ZD can drive low impedence cans just as well as it can drive the sennheisers/akg headphones.

I just meant in terms of the shrill trumpets you described.

that's probably true... the GS1000 didn't have that characteristic. i'm actually starting to get interested in the MS headphones they have....
