My impressions: Orpheus he90, & My new K1000 rig and gs-1000

After some more time with the Orpheus system, I realize it just lets the music flow. It doesn’t add any color nor does it miss anything, which is one of the hardest things for headphone company's to do. The PRaT (Pace Rhythm and Timing) is SPECTACULAR. IT doesn’t miss one beat, and this headphone has got my feet tapping more than any headphone i have yet owned. Transparency is mind boggling to me. Certain recording are just so real sounding its almost scary. I feel like I am right there with the band watching them with no other ambient noise for distractions, where as my other headphones seem like im sometimes sitting a few rows back. Other headphones such as my ATH-L3000 seem like there is a curtain over the performers, and the Orpheus simply lifts that curtain. The atmosphere is warm and invited with warm and full bass. cymbals on the headphone sound very airy and has great attack to it. This system if very relaxing to listen to. This headphone truly shows a presence of an extensive soundstage. The stax sr-omega II headphone sometimes presence the music in a 3d fashion where sometimes it can sound like the drums is behind you, but the orpheus displays the music with a organic, and wide soundstage which is how i believe it should be. The naturalness is also dead on. The percosit effects is so palpable i can almost feel the breath from the artist. Its deep and rich! Visceral impact is great, but not as good as dynamic headphones. It has a quick snap to it, but doesn’t give a full punch like the grado hp-1000 headphones do. Focus refers to the outline or boundary of an instrement with in the soundstage of the recording. The orpheus evokes an extordinary sense of focus. Its delicate and distict. Nothing is blurred. The edge of each instrument within the instrument is very sharp and distinct. The sudden shifts of the music the Orpheus provides adds great excitement and offers incredible transients. Has great grip and speed and the drums sound tight. The horns are very clear with a good sense of bite! I loved the Orpheus!

I will definantly be seeking another orpheus later.

Now that i got my new k1000 rig set up with the sig30 amp i can safely say that i would would be happy with this rig for the rest of my life! Its that good, but of course i can be happy with other nice set ups too of course I really do enjoy the k1000 just as much as my orpheus rig. Still the orpheus is a league above the k1000, but they really do a good job at holding thier own ground. These headphones just rock with great clarity and great enjoyment. Sounds clean as glass. I was doing a comparo with the gs-1000 and i noticed that the k1000 just sound cleaner and sharper. the gs-1000 sound heavier, but has a little more bass and... texture i duno? (but of course im not even using a good amp for them..) This is not to say that k1000 dont have good bass, because they do. It has a perfect amount and sounds VERY balanced. I can feel the bass with my fingers touching the metal grill.

Right now, im VERY happy with the k1000 and red wine audio signature 30 amp. Thanks for everyone on their help with my new rig.

What makes the HE-90 leagues above the K-1000? Price? Or preference?

I would have to listen to the HE-90 longer to know for sure, but I enjoyed the 02 and the K-1000 as much on a much more modest system at the last meet. I expected and assumed the HE-90 would be way above them and to my suprise felt differently after hearing them.

Anyway, I feel the K-1000 and GS-1000 are good compliments. The K-1000 is a window into the music while the GS-1000 gives bass impact (not as accurate as the K-1000) and a better timbre/texture. And with those 2 you don't have to worry about small soundstages.

Don't worry Rob, we'll get to have some quality time with both the K1000s and the Orpheus at Neil's place soon enough.

I really look forward to listening in-depth to both of these phones, and more importantly, it's another chance for me to listen to Neil's EMM Labs source, which I am still having major gear envy over.

Yes, that should be fun

Either way that EMM labs front end causes me serious envy too

Thats how i feel rob. good/accurate descritption.

I feel the he90 is just a league above the k1000 just because it sraight up sounds more real. The k1000 are very real and accurate sounds its just that the orpheus is just that much more convincing. However, in terms of enjoyment the k1000 is every step with the orpheus. both are very fun.
