New to vinyl, a little help please.

Hi there, this is my first post on Head-fi

I've unexpectedly entered the vinyl world by getting an old technics SL-10 from my dad. It works fine except the needle (or whatever it's real name is ) is broken. My questions are: Is the SL-10 a good TT? What will I have to get to make it work again (a cartridge?). And whatever it is I have to get, can you recommend me a good, cheap one? Thanks a lot.

Welcome to Head-Fi and sorry about your wallet

If I am not mistaken the SL-10 is a linear tracking system very similar to the Sl-QL1 which my father has.
IMHO is sounds pretty good.
I recently changed the catridge to a Ortofon OM-P10, which can easily be upgraded by using a Ortofon 20 or 30 stylus.

rodeodude: The SL-10 is a very nice linear tracker - definitely a keeper, if it's still in good shape. Unfortunately the replacement needles for the good old Technics cartridges are very hard to dig up nowadays (and even then one can't be to sure about the condition of the cantilever suspension...), so you'd better get a completely new cartridge. As blueworm suggested, you could go for an Ortofon OMP series model - and Grado and Shure also still offer a couple of P-Mount/T4P models, iirc. Personally, I'd rather suggest the Audio-Technica route, but their P-Mount/T4P range is constantly shrinking. They still had the nice AT316LP a few years ago, and now the AT311EP and the AT301EP also seem to disappear. But if you can still dig up the 316 somewhere, I'd really recommend to go for that - otherwise the 311 isn't bad either, it just doesn't live up to the full potential of an SL-10.

The exchange itself is easy, as T4P/P-Mount can be regarded as plug & play system for phono cartridges: You just open the screw on the side, pull out the old cartridge, insert the new one and finally reinsert and tighten the screw. That's it. Further adjustments are unnecessary by principle/design.

Greetings from Munich!

How could he get a 311 after reading a comment like that?

I second the Audio Technica 316LP, it's a good cartridge if you can find it. Good luck, and welcome to HeadFi.

I have had an SL-7 for 20+? years. A really great turntable, I wish I could've afforded the SL-10 when I bought mine. My only complaint through the years is that the patch cords are inaccessible - terminating inside the case instead of plugging into the turntable. I still have the mounting blocks - these things could be mounted up at a 45 degree angle.

If you can't find the cartridge that they are recommending, I would recommend the Audio Technica AT92E. It's a very decent neddle and cartridge, and is fairly inexpensive. I'm not trying to promote anyone here, but here is a link to a new one currently on Ebay - http://cgi.ebay.com/AUDIO-TECHNICA-A...QQcmdZViewItem

I use this needle/cartridge combination for listening to my records as well as tranfering my records to CD, as it's a fairly acurate/good sounding sounding cartridge/needle combo Hope this helps and congrats on the new turntable.!
