I own the 225's now. I absolutely love them when amped, but I absolutely hate them when they're unamped. True, they are efficient enough to be unamped, but they just don't sound right to me. Should buy a pair of SR-80 to use unamped, or will the 225's sound better even when unamped?

Now that my 80's are breaking in more I can start to really see the difference between them and my 225's. my 225's are so much more open and detailed. I am starting to want to open up my 80's (They sound kind of veiled I guess in comparison)which is what happened to my 580's. I kept wanting to turn them up to make them sound like my 225's,

I don't regret trading off my A900 for the SR80s (indirect, I sold them off first). The SR80s have the punch and highs I absolutely craaaaaaaaaaaave. Compared with the A900, the 80s have very detailled bass as opposed to the AT's muddy and boomy low end. The mids are where it really excels, delivering the oomph needed and the VOCALS that must absolutely be front and centre in my music.
If you don't like presentation where the vocals take backstage to anything, these are the cans for you (non rockers)
In fact, the only improvement for the 80s would be brighter and more detailed highs (the high hat on percussion) Naturally the A900 are comfier, but I didn't experience immediate discomfort at all with the SR80s. It's extended listening that sort of tires your ear lobes.

I agree, the highs could open up just a little more. But at the same time, I like the fact that they aren't as fatiguing as some other cans but still have great mid/lower-end energy. They're plenty detailed. My iBasso T2 should arrive any day now, so I'll try to give a short review of the iBasso/SR-80 combination. This is my main work setup.

Oh yeah...one more thing...because the highs are slightly toned down, they saved my bacon a few times with some brighter songs like Jesus and Mary Chain.

I don't think the SR-80s will ever be as popular. So many people like and enjoy the MS-1s. It seemed like the SR-80s were really misunderstood. The general consensus for a long time was that the SR-80s were overly bright and too harsh. But once people gave them a try and described their sound, you can see that that's not quite the case. Slightly darker, punchier, bassier...almost 180 degrees from what's been posted about them in the past. But as more people try both and compare the two, you can see that an educated consensus is really starting to form about these cans. They're just too much fun to overlook when making a decision.

Well, I do find the SR-80 on the bright and brash side, but never do I find it a bad phone. It's just not for me.

And do remember that Alessandro has a very very vocal supporter here, unlike Grado.

Brook do you think the iBasso's would go along with MS-1's?

I started on the 80's and don't think I can ever go to a can that is laid back. I don't listen to classical so that concert hall feel is not that important to me. As a matter of fact it makes me want to turn the cans up to imitate my 80's or 225's. I don't know about cans with good soundstage. Can you really give instruments proper placement and such with headphones. I makes me think of a different way of faking you out.Granted, I have not owned a lot of cans so I can only judge by what I have had in my posession(px110,hd580,sr80,sr225,assorted cheap earbuds).

The SR80s are a good portable can. They sound good unamped and even better with a good amp. I find that they have plenty of tight bass and grood detail. They are not the most refined cans, but a great deal for the price. I am anxious to try Grado's RS series.
