received the SR 80's today, just now listening to em. WOW, massive upgrade from the sony noise cancelling i bought a few years ago. i gotta go out to eat, but i'm going to be listening to music all night on these bad boys. prob the best $100 i've ever spent

Glad you like them. Even though I have the 325is and the RS-1s, I still love the sound of these headphones. These were my first true headphones as well and even though I've purchased many more since then, I still haven't found anything quite as fun as these for less than $300

I love my 80's!

I got some old leather belts laying around, thinking about using them to create a new headband.

hey PieRat,

if you could describe in words the differences between the three headphones you have in your signature, what would you say are the most noticeable differences for each one? (Grado SR 80, Denon AHD1000, ATH-ES7)

As far as Bass, which has more and which has least? As far as Clarity which has most and which has least? Best mids, best lows, best highs?

Which do you think I will enjoy most (coming from a person who will be listening on the computer mostly to hip hop, pop, alternative, dance, techno/trance music.)

Thanks PieRat!!

Brian

My SR80s are arriving tomorrow. Been using senn PX 100s for my main listening, since they're one of the only decent ones available in the Philippines.

I love my PX100s, perfect for on the road, but after a year of heavy use and more than a little abuse they're breaking down on me. Left phone rattling at low frequencies, padding on the faux leather headband fraying. I'm due for an upgrade.

It's the people on this thread who convinced me to go for the sr80s rather than the MS1s or a handful of other senns. Keep you all posted on my grado experience, how it fares upon first listen, after a few weeks, after burn-in, etc...

Thanks all! Excited as hell and it's all your faults.

Great choice. Dont forget to post some impressions when you get them

Using them as we speak, loving them. Unfortunetly, I made a headphone stand and spray painted it a nice silver, but was too much in a rush to put the headphones on em, and got some silver paint on the headband.

My birthday is soon, so with the money I get, they will be put toward Customs and maybe a fatman711 leather headband and a recable or something, we'll see

Don't kick yourself. Some types of silver paint will always react like that, regardless of how many months you let it dry.

If that happens you may want to go over to a craft store and look for some stick on felt, it comes in all kinds of colors. Even if it's dried, it still wouldn't be a bad idea to have some soft padding for them to sit on.

They arrived! First impressions as promised:

Wow.

Bright. Much brighter than I'm used to with my px100s.

Clear.

Super clear.

Wow.

Should be coming in any day now..

Ok. More composed now. Will try to talk about the last two hours of listening I’ve been doing.

Hearing so much more than I ever heard before. This is amazing! I only have my old px100s to compare with, but these are living up to how I expected them to be and more.

Great stage. Great separation.

Jeff Buckley got a bit harsh for me on some of the highs, but I’ve never heard everything that was going on in the song until now.

Led Zep is stunning.

Wow.

WOW!

Daft Punk- Ditto.

Switching gears, I went to Sigur Ros to see how they’d do with strings.

Holy Moley.

Strange, I find so far that I miss the warmth of my px100s on bob dylan’s blood on the tracks, but the sr80s are absolutely stunning with Elliott smith, all the emotion in his voice and all the super quiet instrumental stuff he puts in under the voice. I sound like a broken record, but I’ve never heard any of that before. His stuff has more dynamic range than I thought. He also does some tricky things with feedback and the super in your face highs make me look around for where they came from.

Can’t wait to break these babies in.

Thick, long cord looks a bit difficult to travel with. Meant these as portables, may have to rethink. Slightly uncomfortable with my glasses on, pins my ears to them, but I mostly use contacts anyway, and I’m too busy listening to worry about discomfort right now. Will check in later.

I def suggest getting some HD414 pads, great with comfort, since I have glasses as well.

These can't be portable as they are open, leak sound like no tomorrow!

Will have to look for where I can order senn pads in the philippines. In the meantime I tried using my spare px100 pads with a quarter mod. Moved the driver too close to my ear, clarity and stage were diminished. I put the bowl pads back and then put the quarter modded senn pads inside between the bowls and my ears. Much better, still a little muddy compared to without them. Will try the "sock mod" i saw on headwize soon.

Pretty much giving up on driving these, cable too long and thick. and the set itself is a bit too bulky to walk around with. Maybe when I have a really long trip.

So I'm using my old senns while outside for now, may order igrados soon, or maybe ksc75s. In the meantime, I find myself wanting to go home earlier to enjoy my still-new sr80s. Seeing friends is nice and all, but I still have all of my music to rediscover!
