Doc's Pay It Forward Music Thread

I saw this idea on the SH forum and I thought it would be fun here. Mods: Any chance of making this a sticky?

The rules are simple: If you see a CD or LP on this thread, you can get it - simply by saying you want it (either by posting here or PM-ing, preferably both.) Whoever offered up the CD or LP sends it to you, free of charge.

Then, if you get a CD or LP, you have to offer one of your favorite CDs or LPs (perhaps one for which you have multiple copies) on the thread for someone else to get! This way, we all hear new music.

I'll start the process by offering the following three vinyl LPs. All three are in VG+ consition. First PM and post (please do both) gets each. Include where to send in the PM. One per person.

Boston: Self-titled. 1976 original pressing on Epic.

Jethro Tull - Stormwatch.

Bach - The Complete Flute Sonatas - Rampal (double LP).

Hey, I have that Jethro Tull Album. I would love to hear it on a vinyl. Too bad... I don't have a player.

Cool idea though. I'm wary to offer my CDs. Even though I have them all on my computer . But here goes:

My favorites:

Medeski, Martin, and Wood: Uninvisible
Mofro: Lochloosa
John Coltrane: The Last Trane

I don't know if you implied this in the thread. But, I would really like to get these back. So, mine is more of a borrow. Like I'll give you 6 months. I don't know its hard for me to really just let go of CDs.

I think this is a great idea; let's make it a two week loaner and restrict it to CONUS (hopefully this will encourage some new material). If noone else posts here, we'll just make this a year-long swap thread!

I'll loan out Neko Case's new CD...

I'm in Canada. Come on. To ship a CD without the jewel case its like $.89 instead $.37. I'm sure you can afford the more expensive stamp . With jewel case its just 2 x $.89. So... not that bad...

the price obviously isn't the issue

Hey no problem - I actually use UPS for everything; I just don't ship very much to Canada - I guess I'll have to brush up on my declarations

Guys I think the intent here is to GIVE AWAY one of your favorite CD's or LP's. Perhaps you have multiple copies of it, or if not, maybe you love it so much that you would be willing to spend $5.99 to have yourmusic.com send a copy of it to another music lover (whom you've never met, and may never pay you back directly). In other words, you give without an expectation of receiving anything in return.

Then just keep an eye on this "Sticky" thread and maybe one day you'll see someone offering an albulm (or a particular version of an albulm) that you've been dying to hear, but for whatever reasons have never picked up a copy for yourself. Or perhaps by reading this thread you'll bump into something that is completely new and different to you, and you can hold up your hand at that point.

Maybe I've read the opening post wrong? I guess a loaner program may work as well, but that would involve extra shipping costs, and the person who really wants the albulm in question wouldn't get to keep it!

Edit: The Brothers in Arms disc (see below) has been spoken for. Kind of cool. The young man who is getting it only has a couple of CD's and is being careful not to spend much money on music because of college expenses (and a wife!).

Anyway, up for grabs to the first taker is a copy of "Brothers In Arms" by Dire Straits, one of my all time favorites. The copy I'm giving away is a CD remaster done with SBM (super bit mapping) technology by Vertigo (Mercury Records, London) in 1996. There are several remasters of this classic CD, and I think this one is fairly 'close' to the source (i.e., not at all artifically 'hot' or bright like the Warner Brothers remaster). My favorite digital version now-a-days is the 5.1 SACD 20th Anniversary remaster, but of course nothing beats the vinyl.

I agree with wmcmanus, I think the intent was for it to be a give away. I will put up the following cds:

Van Morrison - Bang Masters
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - The Last DJ

Gnarls Barkley St Elsewhere. - taken

That is correct - the intent was to give away the CD or LP, after you have claimed a different one from someone else. I offered mine in advance, to get things rolling.

A great idea! I have many lps and cds I might be willing to give. I'd like to see more of what others might offer and if there are a number I'd want. The number of individual offering posts will become very large in no time, so a compiled list of offerings would facilitate things greatly.

nice idea Doc! Here is my offering, the best opera recording ever (or so they say...)

Puccini: Tosca, Callas, Di Stefano, Gobbi - deSabata/La Scala
it's a double CD which I also own in DVD-Audio (otherwise I would never let it go).
EDIT:
Tosca is spoken for, that was quick! And the taker will put up two recordings for others!!
This idea seems to have legs...

I got the Calas Tosca cds(2) and so offer these forward:

Recently there were recommendations in the Music forum for modern classical composers and works. I got these which were excellent recordings and interesting and enjoyable works I would also recommend:

1. SPOKEN FOR by SilverCans-Olivier Messiaen: Et exspecto resurrectionem mortuorum; Chronochromie; La Ville d'en haut Pierre Boulez on DGG

2. SPOKEN FOR by Calaf-Olga Neuwirth: Clinamen/Nodus; Construction in Space Emilio Pomarico, Pierre Boulez conductors on Kairos

I am getting my first Doc's Pay-it-forward (TM) CD, so here is another good opera CD up for grabs

Mozart "Cosi' fan tutte" Highlights - Gens,Fink,Gura,Boone, Jacobs/Concerto Koln

Since I have the complete recording I will gladly let this fun selection go: it made me discover how fun Mozart operas can be, and turned me into a huge Rene Jacobs fan!

EDIT: as I expected, this good CD has quickly found a new home. Let's keep the ball rolling guys, this may become a great way to explore new music...

I guess I'll start the ball rollin' again. Although it would be nice if those who claimed the other CDs posted something..

Calexico: crystal frontier

Maybe not sophisticated enough for some of you guys, but I really like the acoustic version of this song, one of my new favorites.
