I've used MediaMates for about 1 year, and then upgraded them to some ~$20 Altec Lansing 2.0 speakers from CompUSA and found them to sound clearer. That was before I even knew anything about Head-Fi/Audio.

For the $100 speakers, you can't go wrong with a pair of Polk R15 or Athena AS-B1, powered by a t-amp ( or by almost any receiver/amp you already have). This setup was reccomended hundreds of times, just do a search.

you cant get anything better than klipsch...ive gone with them my whole life. I have a 6 year set and work better than the day i got em!
