Different versions of K1000??

I saw somewhere that post 101 K1000 (whatever that is) are highly sought after because they're better
How do i tell the difference? and i noticed some of the boxes are black wood and some are normal wooden.
I think i'm going to take a plunge after i heard it, oh man, what a treat!

Never heard of the '101' thing, but I can tell you for sure there are different versions of at least the boxes and cables: I have the older black box, and the newer cable, which is black white, blue, and red. There's also a newer box, which is clear laminated "natural wood." There's also an older extension cable, which has some drab brown and green wires. Supposedly there's a third older box as well, though I can't say anything for sure about that. I can tell you that if there IS a difference between older and newer models sonically, I have a semi-older (7xxx) pair, and it sounds no different than the newer (10xxx+) pairs.

I believe the "newer" drivers went into use somewhere in the 5000 serial # range. FYI the new drivers are supposedly a little leaner and brighter sounding than the old ones.

You are bidding on a boxed set of AKG K-1000 headphones. As stated in the subtitle, these are the LATEST model K1000’s ever offered by AKG, utilizing the much sought after 101 drivers. We have acquired a limited number of sets from a store inventory reduction (getting out of the headphone business), and they are brand new, not used, refurbished, or “second” quality in any way. Just as they came from the factory! Unbroken factory seal as they have never been opened.

Oh and can someone tell me (or PM me) what i should be paying if i found one? I'm pretty clueless on the price subject right now..

I think the 101 thing is bs, but it's been rumored a lot here that the K1000s did indeed change drivers, long before that auction listing. Perhaps they're implying that the part number for the drivers is different, and 101 is the last three digits of that part number? Who knows. I've never heard of such a thing. Prices have been all over the place. $1300 for a NIB set, up to a grand for a good condition used one. Now they're going on the FS forums for around 800-1000. I got mine for $500 a few months ago, but they're fairly old and I was very lucky. What I can tell you is, don't even BOTHER with trying for them on eBay; they're ALWAYS bid up like mad on there. The best place to get them is Audigon or Head-Fi.

Doesn't the black box denote an 'European' edition, and the brown box denote a 'non European' edition? That's what I've gathered so far -- I don't think it has anything to do with date.

Dec 2005 i thought these were discontinued a long time ago..
Sorry, i've been skipping the K1000 threads because i thought i'd never buy it
Listening to it did make me think 'wow, it's worth it'
So when were they discontinued and how much was it originally? Like the shop selling price

I think AKG officially discontinued the K1000 at the beginning of 2006. Their original MSRP was $1000, but vendors were selling them for significantly lower prices though. I think TTVJ was selling them for $400 or $500 for a while. Yup, I should've bought four pairs back then and sold two

i've read some thread during my research that the older models has better bass while the newer models has brighter highs.

And people bought HD650 or RS1 because..
I can't believe i haven't had the tiniest bit of desire for them until now
Probably because of how we wear it

No it's not, you can call AKG and ask them. They changed to the 101 drivers somewhere in the 10000s.

Can you plug these directly into the binding posts of a balanced speaker poweramp, say a Chord SPM1200E (2 x 350 W RMS into 8 Ohms, 2 x 620 W RMS into 4 Ohms, 2 x 750 W RMS into 2 Ohms)? Will it be to difficult to tune the volume from a preamp because of the high-powered nature of the poweramp?

Also, how do I get the adaptors to turn the 4-pin XLR into bananas (yummy!)/spades (yuck!), etc?

I don't have the K1000, but I'm interested!

I use my K1000 with a monarchy SM-70 Pro power amp (which is for speakers) and a passive singlepower preamp. It works great.

can some one confirm if the newer drivers are brighter? also is it worth buying the SAC K1000 amp or looking for soemthing thats got more power?
