They are surprisingly loud enough with that philips player. I went grocery shopping with the above setup today and it was certainly more than adequate. Being pure earbuds they are MUCH more open and airy sounding than an IEM, with very useable soundstage. They are noticeably less in the head sounding than the MDR-EX90, one of the more open sounding canalphones I have heard.

I may be in the minority, but I could be perfectly happy using them unamped from that philips player. Although adding an amp DOES increase dynamics, bass extension, soundstage depth...just about everything improves with an amp. The PK1 sounds REDICULOUSLY good with my earmax and my home setup. So... I'm certainly not reaching their full potential in an ultra-portable setup.

"Vintage" Etymotic case! I believe they haven't been making those for at least a year or two

Sybaek and kramer5150: the EX90 are good aren't they If only they had more definition in the mids and bass, which atm sound a bit muddy to me.

Yeah they need to be modded to really free up the mids. bass is a bit muddy and un-refined, but it is bloated just enough to keep things interesting. More of a fun bass than an articulate kind of bass. Similar to the KSC75 IMHO.

Might try the older portable rig threads. This one has mostly 5g or 5.5g iPods.

Thanks tonym & cosmic castaway. Trane is one of my favorite artists, and I know this song fairly well, so it's one of my go to tracks when I buy a new piece of gear, like this iPod.

Can someone please tell me what plugs those are, and where can I get them?

Nismo, try Ole (From Trane's Ole album) for a test drive with new gear... the double-bass let's me know if the new stuff is a keeper or not!
