first of all i know nothing about paypal and have never used it but i registered just for kicks.

ok now on to the story

im selling something on my local trade sites and i got this guy kept saying that he wants to pay via paypal (which is very uncommon around here) and that he wants to send it to his son in Nigeria.

im 90% sure this is a scam but how just dont know how this is possible via paypal. once they deposite the money into my paypal account in what ways are they going to try and get it out again? im kinda confused about all this and if someone can explain and elaborate in details it would be real great!!!

cheers!

I'd be VERY careful about shipping to any address other than the Paypal verified addy. Take a close look at the paypal dispute process.

I don't think it's possible to get the money back as long as you're legit and send whatever item it is. When he transfers the money over, transfer it into your bank account right away. That way, you get the cash "in your hands". Anyhow, it should be quite difficult to scam as a buyer on Paypal. Paypal or the credit card company will have to go after the man themselves if the numbers don't add up. You shouldn't worry at all.

Do not ship anywhere but the Paypal confirmed address. Period.

Let's say that he pays by credit card. The money shows up in your account. He claims non-delivery. Paypal pays him out of your account. Or, if Paypal refuses, he initiates a credit card chargeback. Again, you lose. It takes several days for Paypal to transfer the money to your account. It can be stopped at any time. I'd also check Paypal's TOS. If there is a chargeback, you want to be sure that they can't simply draw the money back out of the linked bank account if there's a fraudulent chargeback.

Scared yet?

You could also use registered post and hence have proof that the item has been delivered and received at the address. Of course, I would personally send only to a verified address.

If it concerns you, give a few days of gap between receiving the money (and starting the bank transfer immediately) and sending out the good. That way you can be sure if the would-be buyer tries to withdraw the payment, you still have the item in hand. Of course, if there is another potential buyer with a less suspicious background, I will give the preference to him/her.

Cheers!

x2...

Some of the most common scams I have seen involve shipping the item to a relative, brother, friend in nigeria, romania. Not sure what it is about those 2 countries... But based on my observations trading and selling guitars and tube amps... those two places are a scam-hotbed.

I'm guessing they have a foreign address, you ship it there and they claim it gets lost?... or claim it was never received, and they pursue a chargeback fomr your acct.

Play it safe, avoid do not sell to this person. Even if it is a confirmed paypal address. Simple rule with www sales and transactions..."If you have to ask, then it is a scam".

I only sell to US residents (HI, and AL) and have been a happy camper thus far.

Flame me for being a racist and a biggot, if that makes you feel better... thats my opinion take it or leave it.
