Ninth gen. 'C9' Shuguang 12AX7's

Has anyone tried these? I bought 5 and am using them all, in my phono stage, preamp, and right now experimenting with using one in my head amp. They have taken the place of very expensive Sylvania gold brand/grey plate 5751's. These are some seriously good tubes. Without judging them based on the price ($4 a tube off e-bay) what I am hearing is comparable to the best NOS tubes I have heard, such as Amperex, Mullard, and Sylvania. There is a slight metallic edge, or glare, but I find the tubes to be detailed, with huge soundstage and airy, very low noise, and without any hints of sounding stuffy. I admit that the Amperex BB 12AX7 I have has even more soundstage, and the Sylvanias are tonally very rich, but these seem to do everything just right and I'm leaving them in my amps for now! I have tried other new 12AX7's, such as the EH and JJ ECC803S, but there is no comparison.

It would be nice to eliminate the glare, but I am convinced these are good tubes and am going to leave them in for now.

The glare may very well go away after a you get a good number of hours on the tubes.

I think it's already starting to go away, but I can never really be sure if this is my ears adjusting or due to actual burn in. Oh well.

I just took out my 50's Amperex D Getter Bugle Boy 12AX7 and put in the humble $4 Shuguang, and to my ears, its smoother, and I prefer it. I'm really happy!

I went back to my expensive NOS tubes but these definately are nice tubes esp. for the money.

Strong points: accurucy, detail, extension
Weak points: some harshness, not as 'magical' sounding as NOS
