You just enjoy having new toys, and the community helped you discover this

What would you guys say is the best after market cable...Cardas seems to be the most popular, but there is a few different options.

a few different ?? there is just tons of options !! and I don't feel cardas is the most popular...
APS V3 is maybe the most popular with the stephan audio one.
then you have the very good and expensive mobius from zu
and double helix (that I have)
and enigma
and moon audio
and...

I guess all are good... choose copper vs silver then choose the price you want to pay

only now, after using the foobar EQ i can appreciate the hd650. (i have them for 4 months)
I am working on it for 3 days now, but i finally managed to get them sound just right. I really made them bass monsters..now they sound like the open version of the denon D5000.

anyway..even now, I wouldn't call them amazing...they sound really good,no doubt. but far from amazing IMO. I guess that i am more denon sound type of guy.

Make or have someone here make you some cables. Much cheaper. akdmx made me some. Very quality stuff.

I've had the HD650 for about 4 years but only just recently upgraded to the SAA Equinox cable. Makes these headphones even better for classical & jazz, actually for any type of music that doesn't require outright bass-slam or is Rock/Metal guitar-heavy.

I haven't tried any other aftermarket cables, but can vouch for the Equinox removing the so-called veil by adding a little more richness in the lower frequency and especially in the higher frequency. It's subtle, but noticeable especially if matched with a decent source that already has good synergy with the HD650.

I owned the Moon Audio Blue Dragon V3 and currently own the Double Helix DHC Nucleotide Blackout (jeez these names are as long as the cables).
Out of the two, I thought the Double Helix was clearly better. The Blue Dragon was smoother than the stock cable and reduced the amount of bass (maybe made it a tiny bit tighter too). It also increased some low level detail in the upper bass/lower midrange.

The Double Helix was brighter than the stock and Blue Dragon cables. It reduced the bass only slightly but improved definition and speed. I also noticed some increase in detail and air.

It's a bit strange because both are UPOCC cables and both 5 feet long. The only difference was that the BD had a neutrik plug while the Blackout had a Furutech. Still, I did not expect there to be any differences between the two aftermarket cables, and definitely didn't anticipate the magnitude of differences I found.

Agreed.

Hi,

I've just ordered these from:

Play.com (UK) : Sennheiser HD 650 Open Headphones : Electronics - Free Delivery

I'm a little worried about this new revision. Will I be getting the new ones or is it pot luck?

thanks,
adsmithy

If you just ordered them, they will be the new versions. Distributors simply don't carry old ones anymore.

I'll be joining the HD650 club in about a week or so. Got them used from a fellow headfier for a descent price shipped to Japan. Not as cheap as I wanted to pay for them, but at least it's not the $500+ asking price on Amazon Japan!
Can't wait!

Received mine yesterday from Play.com. They were on offer @ £179.99 so couldn't refuse. I only have my Sony x1060 to run them with but from the first listen they are a massive step up from what I'm used to.

I need to decide on a full size pre-amp/headphone amp w/ or without an integrated DAC now. Any suggestions?

Sure. The Purity Audio K.I.C.A.S. Caliente. I've owned one since July 2008, and it is still far and away my favorite amp paired with the HD650 of all of the full size amps I own: a Mapletree Ear+ HD and an Amphora. I really love the Mapletree paired with my HF-2, and the Amphora with my ALO-780, but with my HD650, the Caliente brings out their best in ways that the other two amps simply do not: it plays to their strengths and gives them in abundance everything they need to produce gloriously beautiful audio.
