The old ones have black drivers when you look at them from the outside of the cups (through the grills) and the newer have silver drivers. everything else is exactly the same as far as I could tell.

Awesome. Thanks for letting me know!

Does anyone know if there are supposed to be any differences in sound between the two? I heard the later ones are better...

I hear good things about Frank also, but...I must say that Steve Eddy from Q Audio makes one sweet cable. You get any cable now finished in mini xlr connectors with adapters for the hp's that you use. Very, very nice!! biggrin.gif

Well I guess this is a familiar picture for many of you..... taking off that packaging was quite a treat on it's own.

I have them out and I have been using them for about 25 minutes so far.

I am listening from an Onkyo nr-tx509 receiver from the HP out on the front. My lyr doesn't come in until tuesday.

All I want to say right now is if you told me that this was it. That there was no improvement to be had of any kind from here. I would still feel these were worth ever penny I spent on them and then some. Am eager to pair these with the lyr in a few days.

The lyr will take these to a special place. Did you get the GE tubes? There are tubes that will bring out even more from the 650's...kinda depends on what you're after.

Congrats!!

Congratulations. The HD-650's don't sound bad at all through a modern headphone out, aka a cheap opamp amp. The Lyr is something else though; it should be a sizeable bump up in the lushness and overall coherence of the sound.

Welcome to the fold Doc. Good to see somewhat of an HD650 resurgence here.

You know what, I am not even sure. It was an open box from Audio Advisor. Guess it will be a surprise. Didn't even think about it just pulled the trigger based off of numerous recommendations I changed my asgard order to a lyr.

Really looking forward to it.

No one wants to answer my questions? It's all good. I'll just enjoy my Sennheisers. I got 'em by the way... haven't listened to them, but I will soon!

The earlier versions were "reported" as being veiled. The silver screens "reportedly" fix this.

Doc, I hope for your sake the Lyr doesn't ship with the old stock JJ tubes. They are a terrible match for the HD650 (or any headphone for that matter). Unless you like fat, bloated bass smearing the entire spectrum. Good thing the GE tubes are readily available and for little cost. If you venture into tube rolling madness, I implore you to seek out Amperex A-Frame Orange Globes. These aren't as premium as other tubes and therefore don't demand absurd prices, but there's a special synergy to be found there with the HD650.

What's tube rolling?

I hope not too if that's the case. I didn't even think about it when I ordered. Thanks for the recommendation, I took a screenshot. I am crossing my fingers I don't get into tube rolling "madness" as you so accurately described it. Thats just gunna get waaaaaaay outta hand (more tubes, more amps, more tubes, more amps). biggrin.gif

Basically, you keep a bunch of different, compatible tubes in a drawer; and when you open it, they roll around.

Its basically experimenting with making your own preferred sound by trying different tubes with a tube amp. I believe (but am unsure) it derives from the concept of rolling your own cigarrette.
