Sennheiser HD650 Impressions Thread - Page 602

Cheers joebobbilly smily_headphones1.gif Haven't figured out how to quote from the mobile, but at that price, do you reckon upgrading the PSU (to Graham Slee's PSU1) would prove a better option to begin with in terms of sonic improvement?

Hey guys, I'm in line to pick up a pair of HD-650s today, but I think I might've read somewhere that Sennheiser did a revision on the HD-650 that sound different than the original version, so supposedly there are two versions. Does anyone know? And if so, what are the differences between the two, either sound wise or physical build wise? Is there any way to tell which one is the newer revision?

There are at least 2 versions of the HD650, I've had both (but I got the first one in bad shape so Ill refrain from listing differences). The old ones have black drivers when you look at them from the outside of the cups (through the grills) and the newer have silver drivers. everything else is exactly the same as far as I could tell.

All I know is if the Fed Ex truck drives away again today without handing over my 650 before the weekend you are going to see a grown-ass man cry. Yes real tears. frown.gif

Senny doesn't send tracking and I can't seem to log in to check it.

i got mine from sennheiser yesterday and boy are they glorious.  my first good pair of full size headphones ever.

cable is WAYYY too long for my needs though so I'm in contact with Toxic Cables to get myself a 6 foot cable; not for the performance difference but because i'm pretty bothered by this 10 foot cable.

anyway, these things impressed me most with good vocals.  i started listening to a few fast songs but once i got to the slower ones with good vocals, boy did these things impress.  even more so once i set my amp to high gain.  i dont know nearly enough about the various settings yet, but putting it to high gain just made the vocals so much richer and the sound much, much fuller.  it was a very nice experience.

will give further thoughts after some more listening.

You could just run it behind a desk or cable tie it. You may find that you want a longer cable at some point.

post #9024 of 18549

Well yeh I'm definitely keeping this longer cable in case I ever need it, but for whatever reason, this excess cord looks like clutter to me and I hate clutter.  I want this to be perfect and right now it falls short with this cable tied, bulky looking cable hanging from my head.

Its also a way to see if costlier cables actually make a difference in sound like some say.  I dont expect huge gains, and as mentioned, dont need them, but now I've got at least two reasons to purchase a better cable.

Congrats! Have you gotten a quote from Toxic Cable yet? Just curious what the cost is. I'm fine with the stock cable for now. I've always been a bit skeptical of cables, especially when it comes to price to performance ratios. But I get that you are more concerned about having a shorter cable, not a different sound sig.

I've spent a few days with mine now, and these things are just wonderful...I try not to gush or fall into "new toy syndrome" but it's been a loooong time since I've been at work or even out-and-about and really just yearned to be sitting at home listening to music on my headphones lol. But these HD650's are doing just that to me...

well i've been speaking with Toxic thru PMs here asking questions, and he said I can place the order thru PM too.

the pricing is on the website.  i didnt really ask for special pricing or anything.  its gonna be 80 pounds plus 12 shipping, so around $150 bucks altogether to get here to NY.

its a lot of money for a cable, but much less than many of the American companies are asking.  i've been in a spendy mood lately so I'm too bothered by the cost for some reason.

Ok no man-tears today...... ups is unloading right now.... someone's grabbing my box.... biggrin.gif

(speaking of cables I think I'll need this one from my PC to my reciever..... if you haven't read those reviews yet its a good chuckle.

Have you thought of using a cable tie? You could also try calling sennheiser and seeing if they can sell you a replacement HD25-SP cable. I think they have two kinds though, one is steel and the other is copper. I dont know if it's a 100% fit, but the connectors sure do look similar.

Edit:

I think these are the right part numbers:

523878 = Copper

069427= Steel

Got my HD 650s today, and boy ... they are amazing.  Obviously, they aren't burned in yet, but there is a very noticeable difference between the HD 650s and the HD 555s I have had for a while.  The HD 650s are so much more clear.  Have no regrets at all.  Now I just need to get a better amp.

You will be glad you ordered from Frank....
