HD. 800, so I was looking for something that could maximize the sound qualities of the higher-end phones, which, by and large, seem to work best in balanced wiring...or so it seems based on that which I have read here on Head-Fi...

So, please keep those suggestions coming...I am listening...

By the way, as I am not an electrical device hobbiest, and therefore would not be able to properly re-solder which ever connections would have to be broken/re-soldered, where might I have that done, so that whatever balanced cables I elect to purchase, so that once all are connected, they would not destroy a balanced amplifier OR my very nicely broken-in 650's?

    Sincerely,

    T. A. Kogstrom

If you're thinking about it like that - that the amp should be for future more high-end headphones as well I'll withdraw my recommendation of the burson and suggest that you simply go for the mjolnir. I haven't heard it but fram what I've read it seems like almost a no-brainer at that price point.

Soldering on a four pin connector isn't that hard but if it really isn't your thing there is usually a fair amount of balanced HD650 cables on the second hand market.

has anyone used the audio-gd NFB-6 with the hd650s? it seems like a good deal price wise for a fully balanced input/output amp..

Yes, but I did not have a balanced cable for the hd650 at the time. I used the SE and was not that impressed. In fairness, the SE termination is not nearly as good as the balanced on the nfb-6. I had a balanced cable on my he400 at the time and it was much better.

Hmmm...

I think I prefer the Valhalla with the HD650, it makes them feel a lot more intimate. Maybe this intimacy is the veil that people speak of, but its what I actually love about the HD650.

Its not that the HD650 doesn't sound good with the Lyr, it does in all ways. It could be the tubes that I have, or it could be the hybrid vs OTL sound, but the HD650 to me, become more neutral. The sound really reminds me of the DT880s. (Which are great headphones btw)

But as of now, I know which amp I'm going to be pairing with my HD650 :D

Maybe one day when I have extra cash I'll buy the newer rollable Valhalla (currently rocking the original)

Nice to hear your liking the Valhalla, IcedTea. When I upgrade amps its either going to be the Lyr or Valhalla, I am leaning towards the Valhalla at this point.

Hi all Headfi-er,

Long time reader/lurker but finally really getting into it. After months of reading and some auditioning I've finally bought myself a pair of HD 650 and the Violectric V100 amp to go with it. I would like to begin by saying my wallet hates you all. This year is the year i've upgraded both my portable and home sound system. Westone 4R and UM3X for my portable setup.

so errr nevermind me I'll just go back to standing in the corner, I don't believe i know enough about audio equipment to have anything useful to share.

But thanks for reading XD

I owned the dt990, over a year ago, and the hd650 today. Now granted I going off memory but I'd give a huge nod in favor of the hd650. The dt990 was a very nice hp, had some decent bass presence and was incredible comfortable but it could not compete against the hd650. It was too bright for me mostly. And the mids just didn't do it for me.

Lyr impressions are worthless without divulging the tubes used.

I think that he mentioned already that he was using the stock GE tubes.

OTL and hybrid would definitely have some difference in sound, but since Lyr changes a lot with tubes it's safe to say that the tubes played a big role too.  The 6NS1 tubes that come with the Valhalla should be warmer and tubier (the same tubes are available for Lyr as well, though without the matching power tubes), while the GE's are very SS-like in terms of crispness and neutrality.  On the other hand, I'd love to hear what the clearer more neutral tubes sound like in a rollable Valhalla with some warm power tubes behind them biggrin.gif  To me the non-rollable Valhalla was uninteresting next to Lyr, but now that Valhalla is rollable on newer models, it's a much more interesting comparison!

Great combo and upgrade session! It's always hard to go wrong with Violectric anything biggrin.gif  Sorry about your wallet! Today it's a V100....tomorrow you'll be stacking Dark Stars and realize "all that bass control and clarity you were missing" as you're amazed at the ever-scalabe HD650 rolleyes.gif  It's certainly the last headphone you'll ever need!  Can't promise about want if you keep reading Head-Fi, but it's the last one you need wink_face.gif

It's always fun when the "old trio" (quartet?) gets compared still :)

LOL, nah, for HD650 it's hard to go wrong either way, it's a preference thing.  No reason not to be happy with Valhalla.  A rollable Valhalla would have been nice....but both are good amps! biggrin.gif

I also use an OTL amp on my HD-650 (LD MKIVse) and love it. But to be honest, when the HP is connected to the OTL and sounded super mega good, I get distracted listening after some time because of the anticipation and urge to switch back to the Lyr. Then when I am using the Lyr, I have the same feeling to switched back to OTL!

It is tough! I have Phillips JAN ECG 6922 (the blue labeled ones) in the Lyr, and Russian 6H30/ CBS Hytron 6AK5 in the OTL amp.

I just acquired an output transformers from Sowther with HP taps to use in my 45 amp to see how it sounds with HP's. When they arrive, all hell will brake loose for sure! :>)
