Sennheiser HD650 Impressions Thread - Page 540

Seriously considering just skipping LCD-2s and getting Lyr+ Bifrost next month for the HD-650. I was going to wait 3 months and just save up to get LCD-2 with a set up built around that.

But I'm really loving my 650s.

Oh yeah, matt. I forgot to ask you. Was the bifrost a big improvement over the dac portion in the e17? I haven't ever heard any higher end dacs, so i'm wondering if the difference is really worth saving for another few months. redface.gif

Well, yes. The BF is a significant improvement over the e17. I tried the e17 as dac is a few different situation but it always disappointed me. As an amp/dac it does pretty well with something like the he400.

Hmm, i might have to start saving again, lol! This hobby is killing my wallet every time something drops into it. Oh well, if its headphone related, its gotta be worth it right? biggrin.gif

Well, with this version, I don't get that impression at all - at least to the extremes I've read about. Cheers!

Gratz Tali!

Yah, I try to write on these forums that the detail is there on the HD650s.  Everything I hear on other headphones, I also hear on the HD650.  The HD650 just doesn't push some of the ancillary sounds to the front.  Which I think is a good thing.  There is definitely a focus on the midrange and the vocals are definitely pushed forward, but none of the detail is missing.  It's probably an odd adjustment for someone used to a V sig headphone.  I know there is atleast a full song adjustment period when I A/B my DT990s and my HD650s.

I try to avoid using the term "veil" because it implies it's hard to hear with less detail.  Recessed?  maybe.  Veiled?  hells no!

Agree with Eargasmo, although i don't even have any proper amplifying device yet,i feel the same difference from the DT990,the Sennh's is clearly less aggressive, but obviously there are more differences that deserve more words..

There is a lot of Shiit battalion posters lately, hein?

Not going to read every page but to whoever has the HD650s.

1. What kind of music do you listen to?

2. What amp/dac do you use with your HD650?

3. Is it worth the upgrade from a HD598? (assuming you have/had one)

I'm looking for a new pair of cans just for music purposes. (I like most genres but I mainly listen to punk rock, alternative, 'indie')

1) Lots of stuff.  Primarily a rock guy, but I do many styles.

2) Burson Soloist and a Bottlehead Crack+Speedball (and I also liked what I heard out of the Schiit stuff)

3) I have the HD595 and have listened to the HD598.  The HD598 is a much better headphone than the HD595 (which sounded too tinny and trebbly).  I do find the HD650 to be a superior headphone to both, and definitely worth it at the $350 I paid back when it could be had for such a price.  Worth the upgrade?  I'd hate to have anything but the HD650 at this point, but while I wasn't happy with the HD595, I think I'd be content with the HD598.

Will a HD650 with a decent amp sound better than an HD598?  Yes.  (I even think it's better unamped, straight from my MacBook Pro)

Is it worth it to spend ~$450-500 plus whatever you spend for the amp?  It's your wallet.  You're already doin' pretty well with the HD598, but if you're looking to upgrade then maybe you don't think you're doing well enough.  I can easily make both the "save your money" and the "go for it" argument, depending on which one you think will help you more.

1. I listen to pop, jazz, classical and a little rock.

2. lyr and bf

3. I have the hd598 and the hd650. On my setup I feel that most of the potential of the hd650 is realized and it is clearly superior to the hd598 in every way. I have a LNIB pair of hd598 for sale. biggrin.gif

I listen to most things except rap. Currently I have a DacMagic Plus as the HP amp and the Dragonfly that I am running the 650's from. I have the Decware CSP2+ on order. The HD650's are wonderful and will give you the best of the amp you are using.

1. Metal (atmospheric and funeral doom), Classic Rock, Soundtracks

2. AudioEngine D1 for DAC and either Little Dot MKII or Meier Corda Jazz for amp depending on if I am in a SS or Tube mood.

3. Cant help there.

Funeral doom? I'll have to look that up later.. when I'm in a better mood.
