It's taken me 12 months to truly appreciate the rev.2. I was quite vocal in the past about my preference for the HD650 over the LCD-2 but I no longer own the Senn and I now can't bring myself to part with the Audez'e. That said, I don't add my voice to the chorus that the LCD-2 is the natural "upgrade" from the HD650. The LCD-2 could't make me part with the HD650. It took the HD800 to do that.

What's the DAC? Is that the E5? I'm running Music Streamer ii+ -> E9 -> stock HD 650. The MSii+ made a surprising difference from the E7. Subtle but noticeable. My biggest diss appointment with the E9 is low volume channel balance and static on volume adjustment. Otherwise, it's adequate-ish.

I'm considering getting a desktop amp instead of my portable AHA-120.  But I have to say, even my portable AHA-120 (granted an expensive portable) made an impressive difference over the E9. If you like the HD650 w/ the E9, I think you'll love whatever high grade amp you can get. For me, the HD650 was that much different with a better amp.

And honestly, I never expected to be saying that about an amp. I wasn't really a believer. Now, I can't wait to get to a meet to hear some others!

I really wish I knew how close one of the Schiits (especially the Agard) were to a Burson in quality ...

Disastermouse: Have you considered the Burson? It seems like a semi-affordable next step and there appears to be some good synergy with the HD650? Not sure how it scales with other headphones though...  Or you could get the Soloist, which from early reviews seems to run just about everything...

I have really been enjoying my 650's running from the DacMagic+ without an amp, but I am beginning to wonder how much more I could enjoy things with a good amp taking that responsibility from the DM+.

That's a difficult question to answer. I'm going with the standard response - the HD650s scale nicely. That said, I can hear a difference between my amps but it's sometimes difficult to say if the performance difference between a ß22 and a CK²III is worth the price difference.

No I haven't. I know, it's a cardinal sin to make a recommendation on something you haven't heard. However, the Schiit products are fantastic value for money, made in the USA and are active on these forums. Win win.

I meant E7/E9 combo actually from my earlier post, not sure why I typed e5.

As for how much I'm willing to spend, I don't have a set price yet. I would just like to see what immediate and noticeable upgrades are available for under 1k, but several options at different price points.

Definitely still in the honeymoon phase.  I really should wait a month at least before commenting on them.  With that said I'm really starting to feel the weight of the LCD-2 after a few long sessions.  The headband has made the top of my head really sore from a pressure point, I'm constantly adjusting them like I did with the K701 bumps.  The HD650 feels like a dream to put on after using the LCD-2... in fact I'm listening to the HD650 right now and the LCD-2 is sitting there looking like a death trap out of the movie SAW.  angry_face.gif

You should line the inside of your LCD-2 with a extra layer of foam. I too suffered from the pressure points, mostly when wearing a hat though. haha.

I know not everyone here will agree with me on this,
but if you have that much to spend, better get new headphones instead if you want to go for improvement.

With a budget like that you could go entry-level Stax, which in my experience is significantly better than the HD650.

We are always looking for the next best thing (and Head-Fi doesn't help us stay satisfied with what we have!) Sometimes it is good to know that the 650's are really good headphones and you should just sit back and listen to some music..biggrin.gif

LOL, interesting new twist tongue_smile.gif  Yeah the weight is the one big fear of the bigger orthos to me as well.  Though for me the AKG headband didn't cause the kind of trouble it caused you...it was the uber-stiff pads that drives me crazy for the first 20 min with them.  Though my HiFiMan pad experience isn't all that different.    Interesting that the HD650 comfort is winning you back even somewhat.  IMO no matter how good LCD-2 is...while I'd like to own one, and still may do so, I still doubt it could replace HD650, but complement it wink.gif

I can't imagine who you're referring to, Tilpo? rolleyes.gif  You're right, for $1k there's a lot of things you can do with that money than just an amp.  On the other hand one doesn't need to spend $1k to bet substantial upgrades, in terms of amps, for HD650.  There are plenty of options under $500.  And while there's always the Stax option for a one-headphone-solution, if you have a collection of headphones the amp upgrade benefits all of them, so there's always that to consider.  And if factoring the DAC in...that helps the Stax too.

I wouldn't spend $1k on an amp just for HD650 as a single headphone solution when so many options now exist that didn't used to.  But I wouldn't rule out spending $1k on an amp to power my entire headphone menagerie.

Personally, though, I'm at end-game with Lyr. It just never ceases to impress me.  I'd love to get a stab at Ardilla's WA22....but honestly I'm more than content with Lyr.  I'd consider the Schiit statement gear depending on what it does and price since I know I like Lyr so much, but I wouldn't "need" the upgrade any more than Olor1n's example of "needing" HD800 versus HD650...he may like 800 more, but HD650 is pleasurable enough he could live with it easily (taken from an older post.) .  And by then my tube collection will be large enough to kind of lock me into Lyr wink.gif  I may get curious at upgrades beyond it....but I definitely don't need the differences those upgrades would provide.
