Thanks for supporting my impressions. Glad to know someone out there feels the same way.

Is there anyone who constantly listens to HD650 without an amp?

For budget and convenience reasons, I'd like to use HD650 without the burden of amps.

You know sometimes you forget how good the HD560's really are.. Night before last I dropped by LCD-2's and they just happened to land real hard we have ceramic tile in our living area and it broke one of the yokes that hold the headphone (ear cup) so you can imagine how much I cussed
well luckily Audeze are nice people and sending me two new ones for free.. So it has been almost a year and I looked over and they were my almost 7 year old HD650 on their stand I pick them up and haha I live in Texas and we have alot of dust so dust all over them the cups so clean them up..
PLug them into my Shiit Lyr and it was like a meeting a good ole friend for lunch they have never failed me... smily_headphones1.gif I only buy new headphones every 5 years so haha lets see if the LCD-2' can last that long 7 years and they are shining and belive me I am not babying them I have the LYr Cranked pretty Loud smily_headphones1.gif

I tried listening to them just of my iPhone and it was interesting. Songs sounded quiet and not very detailed. I think unmapped, a $50 headphone would sound better than the HD650s.

I have used HD650 for a about month without an amp before I got the Fiio E17 amp and then later Schiit Lyr amp. Without an amp, HD650 sounds better than apple stock earphone and bose earphone. However, like what the others have said, using an amp will bring out the full potential of HD650. When HD650 fully driven, it will blow you away. You might get addicted to it and you will never go back listening without an amp. If you are planning to buy an amp later, I don't see why you can't use HD650 without an amp for now. If you are not planning to buy an amp later, you are better off getting other smaller (convenience and portability) or easier to drive headphone (or earphone) which sound as good as (or better than) HD650 without amp. You could even save some money too.

I tried HD650 with android tablet directly, it sounded wonderfully.

Perhaps iPhone has insufficient power for them?

Thanks!

What are other headphones (or earphone) which sound as good as (or better than) HD650 without amp?

I bought a hd558 as an alternative, but it lacks the warmth, thickness and fidelity relatively.

Unfortunately the left driver in my HD650 got damaged by what I assume to be from plugging them into a very old receiver with the volume cranked by accident.  Now its a question of whether I pay 155 dollars to get them repaired( money that would've gone towards a nice budget amp), or just admire my new, very expensive paper weight :P

Care to name those $50 headphones that sound better than an "un-amped" HD650?

I'm pretty sure even a KSC75 would sound better than a 650 when driven by an iPhone.

Well, since nuforce also makes the HD, less features than HDP, but same headamp/dac and often sells it for 299.00 I'd say it doesn't make sense to spend less. I just can't agree on anything made by Fiio being a good match for HD650's. As posted repeatedly in this thread, the 650's scale up incredibly well. Listening to the 650's on an Audinst MX1 with the jumpers put on sounds better than any Fiio setup with them, I just don't hear it that way. E9 will play louder of course, but the Audinst plays as loud as I imagine anyone would listen. Don't get me wrong, Fiio is a great bang for buck outfit, I just don't like any of their gear for high impedance cans. The obective2 paired with an hrt streamer II also comes in at 300 dollars, and also does pretty well, although the objective 2 I heard was custom built by it's owner, it should be just as good from jds labs or wherever.  Seriously, if you have good files, it's worth spending the extra cash, going budget amps always costs more in the long run, unless you can just enjoy what you have. Not easy to do in this hobby.

The FIIO seems like a good budget amp and that is what the company specializes in, budget gear.  NuForce is a very high-end company which has recently brought their technology to more consumer friendly designs and price ranges.

I highly doubt it. My HD650 sounds better than my HD 25-1 II under all circumstances. Even when I plug the '650 in my phone and compare it to my '25 plugged in whatever amp.
It doesn't get loud, and definitely sounds better from an amp. But bad? No way. I still sounds divine; just less so.

The HD 25-1 II is about $200, and I highly doubt that it will be outperformed by a $50 can.
