If there's a way to make an HD650 sound as good as an HD800 I'll be speechless.

Get a balanced system for yours and find out.wink_face.gif

I've heard both the HD600 and the HD650 on fairly high end set-ups (Woo Audio WA2 and Cavalli Audio Liquid Fire) and I'll have to say that the HD600 doesn't scale up quite as good as the HD650. The HD600, while it does sound marvelous on higher end equipment, still doesn't quite as good in terms of scalability that the HD650 presents, IMHO.

I am interested in hearing your opinion on HD600 vs HD650 on high end amps. Can you please elaborate more? What is missing on the HD600 and HD650 gains?

I think you will be happy. I have listened to the 800's on some very nice amps (m903 and darkvoice 337 SE) as well as some less expensive amps like my bellari HA540 and while the 800's are AMAZING on the darkvoice (less so on the 903), i was quite impressed with my bellari (I enjoyed it).

My Senneheiser HD-650 headphones including both the stock cables and Moon Audio Blue Dragon cable will be delivered to my home next Tuesday by UPS. I am eagerly looking forward to receiving it and plugging them into my mid-fi audio system!

Hey guys, I am in a bit of a dilemma  and was hoping you could help me out.  I am stuck between getting a pair of hd-598 or hd-650.  $100 price difference between the offers I've found.  I do not have great equipment and was looking to purchase an amp/DAC combo for about $200 or less.  My question is, Would my money be better spent getting the hd-650s and running them with the lower amp or would I be happier with the hd-598 which might sound better with the lower amp/dac?     If you think I should go with the hd-650s any recommendations on and amp/dac that would work great with them around the $200 price range?

Have you considered the HD-600?

They are more neutral than the HD-650, and sound really good out of lower/mid amps. I'm going to be honest though, I have never owned a 650 so take what I say with a grain of salt. But what I've always read is, the 650 needs to be paired with a good amp to get the right sound. I've heard that the 650 can sound muddy if you are pairing it with a lower amp or not amping it at all.

But again, I'm no expert. Hopefully someone can help you out on this one. But it's always been my understanding that the 600 is an easier phone to get into, and isn't that far removed from the 650 sound.

I got some D2000s and they aren't doing it for me, I want a more clear sound. I've heard the HD 650 fits this bill but I have no experience with open headphones, how much sound leaks out? Is it going to be like I have small speakers on my head to everyone else in my house? And should I even be bothering with them if I was looking to power them using the O2?

You can hear it when you're in the same room, but the sound is not very loud at all. If it means anything, the sound of typing on my keyboard or clicking my mouse is louder.
It might be a problem if you're working in the same room as someone else, but you really shouldn't worry about it too much.

The O2 is an excellent amp. I have never heard the O2 myself, but I have no reason to think that it wouldn't perform well.

I would get the HD 650 if I were you. Even out of a cheap amp they still sound good. They might sound a little better with more expensive equipment, but you honestly don't need expensive amps to listen to these cans.
The best amp in the world won't make an HD 650 an HD 800. Sure, they will improve, but compared to an entry level amp/DAC combo, e.g. an NFB-12, even the best amplifiers will only offer marginal improvements.

Like I just mentioned, I would go with the NFB-12 as an amp. It is probably one of the best units you can pick up at around $200.

HD650's are open backed headphones and will leak out to the room.  It'll sound louder to you as the drivers are facing your ears, but the rest of the room can hear what you're listening to at maybe 60-70% of the volume.

Thanks for the answers, that doesn't sound nearly as bad as I was expecting. I hadn't heard of the NFB-12 before, it seems like a good deal. Now just to choose between waiting for the ODAC and getting an O2 or the NFB...

I love my HDP and have had my D5000's paired with it for quite a while now.  However, I found myself wanting to take off my headphones after a rather short time due to how in your face the Denon signature is.  I have just ordered a brand new pair of 650's and am really looking forward to seeing how they sound before and after burn in with the HDP!

I would recommend the Beyerdynamic T70, they have amazing soundstage and great separation. I really like mine, they are cheaper than the HD650s at the moment too.
