Sennheiser HD650 Impressions Thread - Page 32

Ditto...

Ditto...

... if you get them from J&R or B&H you're certain to get the "new" version.

And... you will be very, very pleased with them - especially with a matching source and amp. Few phones sound as good with my sources and DV332.

I couldn't say that about the first set of HD650s I had... about a year ago... which were the "old" version.

The only reason I returned my "new" version, which I received only last week, is... they sounded IDENTICAL to my "new" version HD580/600s... and... I couldn't justify having to sets of phones, which sound IDENTICAL, even though the HD650s were a real bargain.

Even considering that... I still had a difficult time deciding to return them - they sounded so great!

ok i got my amp and the rig is complete for now sans headphone cable.

naim cd 3.5 + flatcap power supply --> mpx3 with kenrad /jan vt 231 --> senn Hd 650.

im reunited with the sound as this was the same rig i had before 2 years ago - then i sold all my gear.

this mpx3 seem to better as the old one i had was one of the prototypes with the old style chasis .

Well just bought the HD 650

Atm it s fed by : Alien DAC + HeadSix

I must say I'm not impressed but didnt expect to be. The HeadSix just doesnt seem to be able to deal with the beast ^^

It fed my se530 pretty well but they re not exactly in the same league

I'm going to think about which amp to build now to complement the hd 650

edit : I'm going to try switching the headsix to high gain though

You definitely need to be using the headsix at the high gain setting. Depending on what kind of sound you are looking for, I suspect you will still be a little "unimpressed."
I have my SE530s paired with a ibasso boa and the two are born for each other.
When I paided my boa with the 650s I was somewhat "uinimpressed" as well.
Just not the same overall improvement in the music.
That is why I picked up a Darkvoice 332 to pair with the 650s. Extremely impressed with that pairing. The Darkvoice has power and dynamic range to spare. I seldom, if ever, turn it up past 12 oclock.

Well, as of yesterday I am a happy HD650 owner. I initially plugged it into my 2Move and the sound wasn't that great. Then I plugged it into my Zero DAC, and what a difference! I am still burning them in, so I am sure the sound will continue to improve. Now I just need to start saving for a DV332.

Congragulations!!!! Some people I am sure disagree with me, but the HD650s need more than the 2Move, headsix, boa, pico, etc can provide.
The wait for the Darkvoice 332 will prove to be well worth it. Although I have listended to the 650s with each of the above mentioned "portable" amps, and they do help some, the 332 opens up a whole new world of sound.

The HD650 + DV332 combo has to be one of the greatest bargains for audiophile quality sound these days.

It's the combo that is really making me curious about switching back to dynamics (from electrostatics).

BTW, hilarious avatar.

I have a Stax rig: Lambda Pros + SRM-313 and I have the HD650s + Darkvoice 332 rig.

I would choose between the 2 only if you put a gun to my head and loaded the chamber, the 650s with 332 are just that good. Without the 332 it is no real contest though but that makes sense since the Stats only work with what is a truly sophisticated and somewhat expensive amp.

I have always advised people who want to sample something in the "best available" range of phone to bit the bullet and save up for a Stax rig, now I have a legitimate "Plan B".

Now... if you want to try another "sweet" combo - try the D5000s with the Dv332, or even better the X-CANv8. They're great with either... and may actually be better than the Senns... in some respects (i.e. soundstage, organic tone and texture, shimmering treble, with even greater detail).

I'm betting you'll like those about as well as your Stax also.

Of course... assuming a good source.

What about the 336i?

Well... I cannot agree more about the source... Many people are completely ignore it. I believe that it is a pitty to use amplifiers like 332 or more expensive with notebook lineouts or regular soundcards (excluded some more expensive ones like juli@ or modded X-Fi with upgraded opamps, which again are more on the mid-fi league). Do yourself a favor and buy a DAC. Even cheap ones like Moodlab Dice DAC, will make a difference.

I looked at the 3 main Darkvoice amps, the 337, 332, 336i in some detail before I settled on the 332.
From everything I have been able to find out including the opinion of Alexander at Jasmine, the main online source for Darkvoice, the 337 and the 332 are very, very, close. He goes so far as to say "virtually identical in sound signature". Since the 337 costs about twice as much the choice between those 2 was actually pretty easy.
Again, from everything that I was able to gather, again including Alexander's opinion, there is quite a bit of difference between the 336i and the 332 especially when paired with the Senn HD650s. The price difference being less than $100, again the choice seemed pretty clear to me.
As you can probably tell from my earlier posts, I am extremely happy with my choice.

I already own a 336i.

In that case, from what I have gathered, the HD650s are an excellent fit. Probably the best single pair to match with that particular amp.
