No... But...

No... but... the slow, dark, veiled sound of the "old" version of the HD650s is very memorable.

The "old" HD650s only approached the sound of the "new" HD650s, when I had the RAL cable attached, and with my Aphex 204 sound processor tuning a bit more upper mids and treble into them.

I've got around 20 hours of listening time on my "new" HD650s and the midrange is really starting to open up. It sounded great out of the box but it seems it's got slightly livelier since then. That or I'm just getting used to their sound.

A wonderful set of cans really. I can only hope the head-fi bug won't bite too soon and make me purchase a 1000+$ amp or anything, hehe.

No offense, but that means that there is little to nothing to backup your claim.

I can back it up.
I have both versions right here with me.
I have a/b-ed them and I have posted about it before.
And if you want to be sure about it: buy yourself an old pair and a new pair and compare them.
Or buy a ticket and get over here to listen. You're welcome.

Can you link to that post, that wouldn't be Patu's HD650?

I agree... go get your own and check it out.

So we have only two people (Patu and Kees), who actually have both versions and can confirm that there is some audible difference running them side by side. I briefly auditioned new version and didn't find it sounding that different from my own, but again that's from memory, I couldn't make proper A/B to be 100% sure, but if the difference is as striking as you claim I should have heard it right away, right?
On the other hand there is plenty of posts from credible headfiers, claiming that their old and new versions sound exactly the same. Same goes for impressions from the meets, don't remember of anyone mentioning that there were good and bad sounding HD650, except Patu's case.
Would be nice if people who actually had auditioned both at the same time post their thoughts here to end up that mystery.

my 2 cents.....if you enjoy them, does it really matter? FEEL THE MUSIC people.

I have a spare 'Smurf' Cardas cable, I originally got for some 580s.

I got my 650s this year from Amazon. I tried it, as you would, but I much prefer the stock cable.

I own a HD595 and an Alessandro MS-1. This week my new HD650 arrived home. The new version I guess, as looking through the grills I see a white something in the drivers area. It's like heaven. Only a few hours of listening til now. I supose that it needs some more time to sound at its best, but comparing mainly with the 595, the difference is clear to me. Now I know the difference between a good Sennheiser headphone and the top-of-the-line Sennheiser headphone. I am very satisfied with the 595s but the 650 are a step forward in sound quality IMO. Less bass in the 650 at the moment but clearly deeper, better defined and controlled (to my ears). Crystal clear highs and velvet mids. I love this sound.
Now I am listening to them with a Little Dot II amp and enjoying :-)

Another Day...

Another day of comparing the "new" HD650s to the "new" HD580/600s... and... there's virtually no difference in their sound!

More and more credence to the posts I saw some time ago, that the drivers are the same - they sound virtually identical!

So... not only do we have a significant improvement from the "old" versions to the "new" versions... but... we also have the "new" versions of the HD650s and HD580/600s sounding the same!

The reason it matters... is... that:

First of all... Sennheiser is "pulling a fast one on unsuspecting souls" (assuming my "new" HD580/600s are authentic)... and...

Second... because the "new" HD580/600s cost a lot less than the "new" HD650s... making the "new" HD580/600s... an even bigger bargain than I've told you all they were! And... they are... "a huge bargain."

The only question that remains is why?

I'm guessing they've been trying to use up all their parts, without ordering new ones for models they have discontinued, or will be discontinuing soon - its simply a matter of using up parts supplies, to avoid ordering more to optimize their profits. And... a few of us have benefited from their economies.

Or... the workers might all be drunk on Warsteiner, or Tullamore Dew... and... just got confused... or just don't give a $#!%.

Strange. My new HD600 and HD650 are quite different, mostly in that the HD600 is brighter and less refined, it also lacks some of the bass punch of the HD650. I could easily tell them apart in a blind test.

What is going on here? My HD650 that's a couple of years old has the white material but it sounds WAY different than my new hd600 that also has the white material. The hd600 and my very old hd580 sound the same, but my hd650 is so much better that there is no competition at all.

I Don't Know...

I don't know...

But... mine sound identical.

Either my "new" HD650s have the "new" HD580/600 drivers, or my "new" HD580/600s have the "new" HD650 drivers... but... they sound identical - they must have identical drivers.

I do think my "new" HD580/600s bass is stronger than my "old" HD580/600s was... and... my "new" HD650s bass is less visceral than my "old" HD650s bass was. My "old" HD650s bass actually caused the phones to bounce on my head - major movement - my "new" HD650s bass is very strong, but they don't bounce on my head like my "old" HD650s did.

Whatever... I much prefer the sound of my "new" HD580/600/650s to my "old" versions.

As I suggested before... I suspect... the folks at the factory... just used what they had available to complete their production runs - whether HD580/600 drivers went into the HD650s, or vice versa.
