Oh so Head-Fi.  Three answers all different....

Isn't it about that time of the year when this topic of box color comes up?

@techboy, Joking aside you only need to concern your self with the color of the screen behind the grills which for anything made after 2009 IIRC should be silver.

Folks, what's better with HD650/600 -- Valhalla-2 or Lyr-2 hybrid (with both LISST and tubes)?

thanks

The conventional wisdom is with the Valhalla 2. I've heard the HD600 with the V2, but not the Lyr 2. The V2 paring is excellent, though.

Most recommend the Valhalla 2 over the Lyr 2 for all three Senns. (600/650/800)

Have a look at the Jot with the 650's using balanced cables, an exceptional paring IMHO.

Thanks all.

I have my BHA-1 balanced, so the Jot is probably surplus for me, although it did look very interesting, the design. I hope it sells.

I may get a tubie or hybrid amp -- part-tube, part-SS. Polaris is SS, but sounds a bit like tubes, so I like that. It does my 600 well, although I suspect something like V2 or Ember might be a ticket.

cheers

I have a Lyr2 and have tried the Valhalla2 a few times, it depends on what type of sound signature you like, the V2 seems to be the more neutral of the two from my short time playing with both.  But I still like the BH Crack for the HD-6XX and HD-800 and the Ember second.

Had a BHA-1 and sold it , no regrets!

I was eyeballing the new Kameleon line filters on Garage-1217. Interesting stuff --- that may be the way for me, instead of yet another amp. HP-specific filters.

The hd650 is one of the better filters. I have a few here and the Senn responds better imo.

When you first hear it, you'd think not a lot has papered, until you revert to listening without filter. It's then that you realise the lower bass has gone missing and the mid bass hump is more obvious.

The filter works really well.

Thanks. I'm optimistic about this. I certainly don't want my 600 to sound like a 650. If the filter adds a bit of sub-bass, that's good. The highs aren't bad at all in the 600. Will wait til production is in full swing, and some more users give frank feedback on these filters. I like G1217's Polaris, so this should be a good synergistic addition for individual HPs. Better than buying a whole new amp like Ember or Valha-2.

Heck, I may even look at the filter for my HE560.

It's probably been suggested before, but I recommend you try the Sonarworks Reference 3 plugin. It really improves the low bass on the HD650. Best part of the plugin is you can customize what type of frequency response curve you want.

Lots of people here don't like to fiddle with EQ for 'purist' reasons. Ridiculous but there you go.
