Looks great MrSpeakers. I have used a Mac for years now. Nothing to dislike except for the price when I have to buy a new one.

Macs, like cars, are better bought used.  $250 for mine.

Today I turned off all the lights, blacked out my screen, closed my eyes, and listened to my rig on shuffle through Front Row...fantastic experience.  Listening really is a different experience sans screen.  I ended up ordering an Apple remote.

Great thread.

The "veil" thing with new 650's is total bs.STUPID.(period)

Comparing them to my several year old HD600's (using the 650 and Cardas cables on both) is interesting. Certainly a little darker perspective, but they are not more "veiled" - if anything the dimensionality and detail is greater, the detail just doesn't hit you like the 600's. The HD600's sound a little "peaky" and grainy compared to the 650's so far. The low bass is also better on the 650's, although I plan to run them in for another week before using them seriously.

The HD650 cable is actually quite nice - I might possibly like it better than the Cardas in some ways. Haven't tried it yet, but I suspect the SAA Equinox cable will work well with the 650's.

Having 2 HD600's & 1 HD650, I can categorically say that they have the Sennheiser veil with the standard cables as compared to the Cardas, Zu Mobius and Equinox cables.

The worst is the stock HD600 cable.

If you can't hear the veil, don't rubbish those of us who can......

Sorry didn't mean to offend anyone.IMO the veil is a psychoacoustic effect based generally based on one of two things:

1.The sound signature lacks clarity and/or brightness when compared with other headphones.

2.Someone reads about the "veil" somewhere and goes "oh yeah".

The fact is I've known MANY people with amazing ears who have no knowledge of headfi but have huge experience with sound. These people have tried my hd650s.None have mentioned a "veil" or the implication(of veiled) that something was before the sound and them hiding the sound. Some have in fact stated they were "dark" though.

Also according to my own impressions(and many stated by the headfi folks) the newer hd650's have been changed to give the impression of more clarity and brightness.Hence "de-veiled".

Yes?

The HD650's have a veil with certain equipment combinations. No veil with other combinations. I just upgraded to the cambridge dacmagic + lake people g100 amplifier and I can say that there is no veil here, the phones are very neutral and fast. But I've also heard the phones in combinatio with other equipment that have made them sound pretty veiled. I once used the Black Cube Linear with another source (poorer than the dacmagic though) and the sound was what I would call oddly veiled.

^ Bingo. Through my ebay RA-1 clone the HD650 can be driven to insane levels but is somewhat congested. If I were to exaggerate what I hear I'd use the term veiled as well. Through the more neutral amp section of my Audio-GD Fun there is no hint of it at all. I even choose to add warmth to the sound by employing the Moon hdam in my dac's output stage. I also use an aftermarket upocc copper cable, so you'd assume that the veil would be exacerbated by these warm components. That's not the case here. What I have is textured layers enveloping a forward (yes forward) presentation. It's fast with great extension. I find it as energetic as my Alessandro and have previously stated it's akin to the MS-1i on steroids (in terms of musicality). I stand by that.

sorry, bro.  I enjoyed them while I had them, but they're definitely smooth and veiled.  nothing wrong with that unless you're looking for a different sound.

they are what they are.

^ sorry bro, you weren't fortunate enough to get a glimpse of how great these cans are. wink.gif

I've owned the 325is, the brightest headphone known to man, and I don't find the HD650 "veiled".

I don't find the 650's have any veiled when amped well. I also find they really shine when balanced, which is cheap and easy with the stock cable.

Yes.

That's because they are not.

1."Smooth" perhaps.

2."Neutral" perhaps not(but most people who who say they know what neutral means or is DON'T.I've worked in recording studios for 20 years I've heard MANY,MANY,MANY different interpretations of this adjective("interpretations"=key word).Every pro studio I've been in has several monitor systems because of this.

3."Effected" Sure, why not?Although I've met 2 real-life orchestra recording engineers(recording the Czech philharmonic orchestra)that used those in combination with hd600's because they said they gave them a "fairly reasonable version of things".

A "veil" in real life hides things NOT colors them or makes them seem more attractive.Example: the veil used by conservative Muslim women.

"Veil" simply caught on with audiophile folks as an easy word to describe various things that they were or were not hearing.

YES!!The 650 may take proper amplification but....

Good phones are just picky.  Always have been, that's the game.  After listening to  a k702 for a few years, the Senn sound, though detailed felt anemic.  Few hours of burn-in later (100), a different setup (Yulong DAH1 mk2 > rca->mini > Rx mk2), a silver dragon v2, tiny foams gone; it's a game changer.  The phones have someone calmed my lust for an ALO chainmail'd LCD-2.  Can't wait to hear what the incoming stagedac/concerto bring.

My Headphile Blacksilver cable and HRT Music Streamer II+ DAC arrived yesterday will let it burn about 50hours to make a conclusion.
