Sennheiser HD650 Impressions Thread - Page 157

So I got my stuff today. I love un-boxing photos for some reason, in case anybody else does, they are below.

Initial impressions after a mere 20 minutes of listening. Sound great, excellent detail. The first song I listened to was Discipline (24/96) by NIN. Sounded so good. Now I am listening to Stadium Arcadium (Hoffman vinyl master), Chili Peppers music is the crucial test for me since they are my favorite. I hope with some burn in the bass will increase, it is a little weak compared to what I am used to. Although I know the UE-11's were always known for emphasized bass. It seems like I have to turn the HDP knob up pretty high to get adequate volume, has to be at 2 o'clock. That's normal, right? I just got glasses today for the first time so I am trying to get used to wearing headphones with glasses. Anyways, will post more thoughts as everything burns in.

Also, which is better; USB or optical from my MacBook? I'm guessing they are the same.

I was wondering that too. Definitely not minimal like Apple. Nice felt box though.

People have reported better bass with burn-in on the 650s.  Take a listen to both usb & optical, FWIR, a lot of dacs produce different sound between optical & usb, it ends up being preference.  (Usually coax trumps both.)  But no coax output on Macbooks.  = [

Just got my Senn HD650 ($350 at JR/free shipping-- call to get this price) to pair up with my Headstage Arrow 3G.  I have a Shure 530 as well as a Senn HD555 (with 595 mod).  This thing has been stuck on my head for the last two hours.  I may never take them off.

This is it!  This is what I was looking for.  Audiophile sound that I can carry around.  Using an old ipod mini (Wolfson DAC) with a FiiO LOD. Incredible sound, just incredible.  Thanks to all the forum contributors who made this possible.  Great advice.

Thinking about doing an imod for the mini.  Any opinions on whether it is worth the trouble?

Yes . . . and no. So much depends on the recording. Sometimes the vocals and/or instruments are right in the center of my head with the 650. But in general I do find that the 650's may not offer the closest sound. They CAN though, given the right recording.

i am waiting on my hd 650's from razordog deals (been waiting for 1 week+ its killing me) i really hope i am gettin the same experience you guys are coming from a900's, se530 and ie8's. I hope my xonar essence stx will power these or else i may have to bite the bullet and get a sparrow ... (its just so hard justifying spending over 600 to listen to music ...) will post my impressions when i get these babies

all im looking for is something to replicate the ie8 sound but with greater detail and comfort

i usually listen in the high 70's to mid 80's, but sometimes for short periods of time will crank it up into the high 80's to low 90's and i have yet to hear any distortion or any signs of stress. they are not the loudest cans out there, but they will definitely handle listening at any safe level.

I didn't have them on my head when I blasted them. I had to go into the next room and I turned the volume way up on my receiver, almost all the way, but then I thought I might have done something really stupid. Which is why I asked if anybody had ever blown a pair. Definitely do not turn the volume up when they're on your head. Take care of your hearing or you might wind up with tinnitus (constant ringing), which is not a fun thing.

Got my upocc cable this afternoon. I decided to go copper to see how it may pair with the Fun's neutral configuration (Earth hdam installed in dac output). Initial impressions are that it is a warm sounding cable. With the Earth hdam there's a sense of deeper bass extension, a slightly wider soundstage and sharper but not shrill highs. These are subtle individual effects but it is apparent when taken as a whole. Perhaps refinement of the existing sound may be a better description.

When paired with the Fun in it's musical and tube like configuration (Moon installed) the difference is quite striking to me. With the stock cable I preferred the coloured and warmer signature of the Moon hdam. I didn't think I would get favourable results pairing my new cable with the Moon hdam but what I'm hearing at the moment is an amazingly energetic and rocking headphone. Bass is low and very present but may be a tad exaggerated. Micro details are resolved slightly better, but where the sound is really striking is in the rendition of the upper mids. It's in your face, sizzling and angry but not fatiguing. It sounds like my Alessandro but on steroids (outrageous statement I know).

Yeah Yeah Yeahs It's Blitz! is a great headphone album with good dynamics, nice stereo separation (particularly some of the guitar tracks), and great layers in certain passages and the way I'm hearing it at the moment is captivating. I think I've gone over with the amount of colouration here and I don't anticipate this setup to work for all my music, but it'll be interesting to explore.

Moral of the story? The HD650 is incredibly versatile. It's essentially a blank canvas. How you paint that canvas determines what you hear.

I've been letting these burn in for 11 hours straight so far. That won't damage them, right? I sure hope not because I won't be home for another 8 hours to turn them off if it does...

it really depends on how loud you left them playing. there really is no reason to rush the break in on these. just wear them and listen to them to break them in.

They are playing at normal listening volume.
