Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

Interesting, while I did consider the Valhalla 2, I was skeptical about it for two reasons. First, I love the clean analytical sound of Solid State Amps, and second, it has 4 tubes, which would come out to a higher expense to replace or upgrade them.

I was planning on going with the Asgard 2 until I found out that I would be required to pay tax, which killed a lot of value for me. After quickly browsing Amazon, I found the Lyr 2 for $325 on Amazon in "Like New" condition. So I went with that, and considering it is a hybrid amp, I think it will introduce me to tube sound while still retaining my beloved solid state cleanness I love.

Thanks for your suggestion though.

Oh okay. Congratulations on your Lyr 2! May I suggest some some Amperex Orange Globes, preferably from the '60s? They sound lovely with the HD-650.

Everyone seems to be suggesting those lol. But I'm not sure if I want to be spending $200 on tubes, especially when they will eventually wear out.

So what does that tell you? hehe. It is because they are great and are not overly expensive like some of the other tubes.

Who told you 200? They go for 60ish, and they have lasted me over a year (I got them last December). I only have three different pairs of tubes for my Lyr, but these have proven my favs for the HD-650. It's a worthy upgrade over stock tubes. PM me if you need a lead on finding a reputable seller.

I was able to find a matched pair of Amperex orange globes on ebay discounted to $50 because the silk screen had worn off of them, but the same seller also had normal ones for less than $100 per matched pair.

New to Head-fi, following for some time.... Finally bit the bullet and got the HD650's delivered yesterday. Coming from DT880/600OHM. Burson Conductor AMP/DAC.  I'd imagine these will only get better but what a difference from the 880's.  Will post some impressions once I get some more time on them.  So smooth....

Hi JassMan,

Welcome to Head-fi. Glad you like your HD 650's. Are you still using the Burson Conductor AMP/DAC? Hope you have a wonderful experience here as I have. Cheers and Happy New Year!

Cool welcome!!  the HD650 and DT880 are two very different sounding phones, especially in the treble areas.

I recently got a pair and have driven them with a Woo Audio WA7 with the stock Sovtek tubes as well as the Electro Harmonix tubes, and the Oppo HA-1. I think the WA7+EH tubes is the best, but I don't love the headphones. I think they suit stuff like Tame Impala the best, but outside of that I'm not sold.

You should use balanced out of HA-1 to get best sound

New to Headfi but have lurked for some time.
Audio Enthusiast who has had a decade long relationship with Sennheiser :
HD 201s -> HD 202s -> HD 428s -> HD 558s (gave to sister for Christmas) ->

And now : HD 650s.
I love their sound. Currently wired into my computer via :
Optical Link (24bit/96000 Hz) -> Yamaha RX-675 Receiver out -> Headphones

What a beautiful experience :

Reminds me of the first time I heard and purchased Martin Logan speakers.
Thank you Sennheiser for making such beautiful, detailed, and warm cans.

Listening material during break-in :
The Cinematic Orchestra - Ma Fleur
Mogwai Live at Roskilde 2014
Cymbals Eat Guitars (KEXP) Studio 1080p
Bear in Heaven - I love you, It's cool

They're really starting to open up over the break-in period. Reserving (Tool- Salival) at critical volume for that final shine
