Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread
Nov 29, 2014 at 1:12 AM Post #20,611 of 46,497
Had the HD650's for about 5 days now, I've literally been re-listening to all of my music collection because I notice things I've heard before with my previous headphones. The ability to critically listen with these is flat out amazing, they are perfectly balanced for my tastes.

If I really need some exploding bass in my head I switch over to my ATH-M50x's but I've been using these things non-stop since I got them.

Thanks for the input friends.

Edit: Stopped being a noob and figured out that I need to buy a RCA and USB cable.

The wallet is crying, but it's done, full setup bought. Pretty excited

I've had my 650s for coming up on three years now. I'm still in love with them just as much as when I got them. They provide the perfect contrast to the DT990s I own. The pairing there has actually kept me from upgrading until I'm willing to spend tons more on the complete set up. Seriously, anyone who is considering these as either a contrast for a 'harsher' pair of headphones or just wants a nice calm forgiving sound must give these a try once.

Excuse me, but I am wondering if anyone can help me decide whether I should buy the HD650.

I am currently using Beyerdynamic T1 paired with Woo Audio WA7 Fireflies. They sound fantastic. The problem here, however, is the fact that nearly half of my music collection have absolutely terrible recording quality. Most of FLAC kpop and jpop music I listen to nearly sound as bad as 128 kbps classical music. This is why I am thinking of purchasing a darker, more forgiving of poor mastering quality headphone. For now, HD650 and Sony MDR Z7 are floating around my head.

How is the synergy between HD650 and Woo Audio WA7? More importantly, how does kpop and jpop sound through HD650? Obviously, I don't expect HD650 to sound as good as T1, but as long as the music doesn't sound like  garbage, I think I will be able to manage. Thanks.

I can't speak about the WA7 from personal experience, but I have read some good things with the pair together. As for how the HD650 does with jpop and kpop, it definitely does well with both. My fiancée and I listen to quite a lot with the HD650.

The HD650's are far to much of a drop in quality IMO.

If you can, and if it is in budget, try to find a second hand non fazored LCD2

Technically the T1 are above the HD650. I may have agreed when I first bought the HD650. But after owning the HD650 for a while, personally I'm not so sure whether they are too much of a drop in quality in comparison. Perhaps it's because they sound quite different, but when I want to switch headphones, it's not because of the lack of sound quality, rather for a different sound signature. YMMV

I've not heard the LCD2s though.

Drop in quality and recommend LCD2, sorry totally disagree, HD650 overall is a way better headphone between the two

I have owned the HD650's and currently own the T1's and LCD2.2's ( as well as the HD800 and HE6 ) and the T1's are far superior to the HD650's on almost every level, and so are the LCD2.2's.

If you feel this is not the case then I would really like to know what amps you are using to ruin the sound of both the LCD's and T1's so I know what to avoid in the future

PS Just realized this is the HD650 impressions thread so would expect this thread to be populated mainly by people who just love the HD650's so I expect my opinions to be dismissed by the HD650's fanboys, just sayin.

I have owned the LCD 2.2's, LCD 3's, HD800's, 007mk2's and HE500's and with the Sennheiser amp, the 650's sound better than any of those.

I also own the HDVA 600 and while it's true, the HD650 sounds mind-blowing with the Senn amp to me the HD800 is still the technically better phone (and measurements supports it).

I respect your experience but using just one amp will not give you a proper insight into a headphones performance.

When I had the HD650's, with Silver Dragon cable, I did not have the system I have now but I managed to get a balanced HD650 to try last year in my current system.

It was the best I have ever heard them but they were still soundly beaten in most areas by all my other phones.
I have heard the Hd650's through a number of different systems now and although I enjoyed then when I had then, my standards are much higher now, they are just weak in too many areas.

Too each there own I guess, but my time with LCD2 wasn't to impressive not much detail, narrow bloomy weird soundstage

Thanks for all the recommendations everyone. I just want to point out though, I am not really looking for an upgrade. I just want to find a can that will let me listen to some of my favorite genres of music in peace, without having myself complaining about the horrible sibilance in vocals and ear fatigue. I am just kind of sad, because while I don't regret my past purchases, all of them are too bright (or too good) for my young ear.
