it would surely depend on the amp. but if the signle ended happend to lack power for max amplitudes, or didn't have a great crosstalk value, then the balance out might help in that regard. but it's more like looking at 2 different amps than looking at single vs balanced.

From going balanced, the biggest difference for me was the soundstage and imaging improvement, and a much more quiet/black background... instrument separation and details are more clear. Bass tightened up (more likely from the improved power of Mjolnir rather than inherently from going balance).

Then again, my upgrade was from a Fiio E09K/E17 setup to my current one... so take that with a grain of salt.

The amp is Bottlehead SEX,I been running it unbalanced with the 650 for a few weeks i forgot that it can be run in Balanced just remembered last night so i decided to chopped off the 650's TRS connector and hooked it up in the speaker taps then switch the SEX amp in balanced.I was surprised how good the 650 in balanced mode with the SEX amp,the difference is not like night and day but it's certainly noticeable at least to my ears. Thanks! for your reply.

Iluvmusic 2... Congratulations again about your Bottlehead SEX. Does this amp have other connection options for balanced mode such as XLR.. or can this be added to the existing chassis?

No XLR socket but it can be added,For balanced option it's either hardwire the output transformer or you can buy the Impedance switch which is IMO it's the easiest way  for switching different impedance tap instead of unsolder and solder into the transformer taps. Thanks!

The sound improvement going balanced with the SEX and 650 is not huge but it is noticeable and i loved it.

For the BH Amps modding sky is the limit you can pretty much do whatever you think will work from Wood base, aluminum plate, hardware and all the electronics components.

Thanks.  I am actually considering the BH SEX, with your glowing recommendation ;)

How's quality of tubes they provide, and would any gains be made tube rolling from stock tubes.. I know this kinda relates to an earlier question, but I'm getting bit closer to pulling the trigger.  Also, any other additions you would recommend when ordering?  I know they have impedience switch option, for one, but not sure how much extra for added convenience.

IMO no need for tube rolling all the 6DN7 from different manufacturers including the stock tube that i have sounds the same to my ears somewhere from the SEX thread mentioned this and i agree.Impedance switch and C4S that's it,It is all up to you if you want to replaced the tube socket and the volume pot.I'am running my sex amp all stock components except for the Volume Pot.

The impedance switch is for switching the output transformer taps from 4-32 ohms instead of rewiring if you want to switch the impedance.Don't forget this amp is a DIY.

hope some of you can chime in with your 2 cents.

i've had a few headphones but have sold all except the HD650.

i'm at present torn between buying a new pair of headphones or upgrading something in my setup. there is just this itch that i cant get rid of....

setup:

1. The 650 is used with Stefan Audio Art Equinox single ended cable.

2. Amped by a Schiit Valhalla.

3. Source is FLAC via USB to a gamma2 dac.

new options include LCD2 or something from hifiman (however, i'm only basing my options on reviews i've read; i've not actually had an opportunity to listen to them in person). to those who have owned or auditioned either of these and the HD650, any suggestions are much appreciated!

or would you guys suggest a DAC or amp change? or even, change nothing at all?

old gear i've dumped - Etymotic ER4P+S adaptor to RS Hornet (super regret selling this setup), grado 325i, alessandro MS2i, Sony SA5K.

I would suggest trying LCD-2. But Valhalla won't cut it.. you'd need something like Asgard 2 at least... or Lyr 2/Mjolnir.
