Yeah, but with time and shipping, it would probably cost more in the long run, compared to simply addressing possibility of a ground loop first.

Not sure where you are in Scotland

I think until I hear better headphones my journey is over. It's a pity there's not many (if any) Scottish members here because I'd like to hear a pair of HD 800's. I won't ever try Audeze or Hifiman headphones because of their weight & comfort issues as those are very important to me. As far as I know there are no shops in Scotland selling the HD 800.

Not sure where you are in Scotland but hifi Corner in Falkirk has both the HD800 and HD700 available for demo (requires deposit). I just handed the HD700 back last week.

Promised the Mrs I wouldn't come back with the 800`s... so far so good :)

Haha, believe it or not my first job out of school was part-time in the Falkirk branch. Big Al was the most eccentric of managers. I live up near Dundee but as luck would have it I'll be in the area tomorrow. I can't though, not right now. I can't actually afford to buy them at the moment (ever?). Thanks for the heads-up though mate.

But he had already sent it back to Schiit.

:triportsad: Ahh.. okay, just hoping would be able to catch him before it was shipped.

Thanks, Uncle Al. I have already sent the unit back to Schiit, who pronounced that the unit was fine. £100 or so in shipping and customs later and I'm none the wiser. I currently have a pair of Telefunken ECC88 in the Lyr, by the way (my current favourite tubes). I am going to France next week and will take the Lyr with me. There is a short "Problems with Schiit Lyr" thread here on Head-fi where I first reported my difficulties. Oh, well. It's 5.00 a.m. and the Lovely Cube is feeding the Chicago Symphony/Abbado Mahler 5 through my HD650s with an impeccable lack of hum.
