Can't say I'm familiar with any of the equipment but it certainly quashed my suspicion that he was just running them out of his phone or something. I guess people must just have dramatically different tastes in sound the same as everything else. I was just a bit bamboozled to hear of someone being deeply disappointed with these cans.

I am not surprised... I really disliked these the first time I heard them.  Some time went by, I learned more about what I like, especially after experiencing more live music and, most importantly, I sort of "forced" myself to acclimate to the HD 650s.

Now, they are my favorite 'phones and I want a second pair for my office.

Mine were silver drivers and they most certainly were a little restrained in the treble energy. Eventually I had to move them and kept the DT 880 as I needed just that touch of missing treble. For the record my hearing is quite good, I had a great solid state amplifier (SPL Auditor) and an Audiolab 8200CD player as my DAC with bit perfect output of lossless files through JRiver Media Center. Other than that the 650 is a  fantastic sounding headphone, and frankly for those who like a touch of warmth, the 650 is going to do so much right, and not much wrong.

Afaik SPL Auditor doesn't pair well with HD650.

Nope, I owned them both for a year, they were an excellent combination. Why would you think they don't pair well? The Auditor was designed for studio work and was rock stable and could swing voltage really well, and in general loved high impedance headphones. For the record I would even consider getting an HD650 again because I know they are indeed a really high return on investment headphone (if you don't pay too much). For around $349-399, great deal, more than that and there are several very good contenders out there. So many good headphones now and so many house sounds to experiment with, certainly more than when the 650 broke onto the scene and redefined just how good an affordable headphone can be.

Read somewhere on head-fi, not my experience. Obviously not all we read here is true, as opinions can be highly subjective.

You're welcome... I have Chord Hugo which does the same job but it's a lot more expensive. Furutech sounds very good for its price, warm and detailed.

No worries, and I'm sure for some they might actually feel that way about the combination, but I can't see how? Each to their own as they say. Cheers.

Try asking on the Crack Sex Mainline thread. I think Mark (McandMar) has some 650's and a hot-rodded Sex

Just have to poke my head in and say how much I absolutely adore my 650's.  I've had them for about 4 years now, and they still absolutely blow me away with their precision.  Best pair of headphones I've ever bought in my life.  I use ATH-M50's at work, and while they're nice and don't require an amp, coming home after a long day to throw on the 650's being run by a Schiit audio Bifrost DAC to a Valhalla tube amp, I can't describe the feeling other than pure bliss.  The DAC is a relatively new implementation in my setup as I was running a NuForce Icon for a while as both an amp and DAC, then the Icon into the Valhalla.  Now its straight Schiit and wow, the 650's shine.  Anyways, just wanted to come in and let a few of my impressions go.  I listen to almost exclusively electronic music and nothing has come close to the 650's in terms of clarity and precision as well as overall balance.
