Is Crack really the ultimate amp for HD 650's, or would eg. the Bottlehead S.E.X. be even better?

It's still a Crack, just refined with a $45 upgrade is all. So yea I'd say Crack with speedball or SEX is better than plain crack. But it's still the same product.

I wouldn't include the Bottlehead power cord when you are comparing to the WA3.  I guarantee the WA3 comes with a cheap ass Made in China power cable.

A lot of people find that the Crack has a special synergy with the HD6x0 'phones.

It's not so simple. Crack is designed for high impedance headphones only while SEX can be used with low impedance headphones too. Also Crack allows tubes rolling while SEX uses just one type of not widely used tube and according to the users as well as amp designer Doc B. there is no audible difference between different manufacturers of that tube

Not entirely true, however the difference is subtle and easily missed.

I heard all three amps at a local show (Bottlehead HQ is just across the bay from me) I was listening on some HD800 (not 650) but I could hear a definite improvement as you went from Crack to Sex to Mainline. If you want to hear a tremendous amp for any headphone get a hold of a Mainline, that thing is absolutely awesome.

Blame the mentally unhealthy people.

Haha same here I too learnt to solder in high school but all I remember was thinking how the the rosin core looked like the silver surfer from fantastic four, I kinda had a bast doing it without any problems though.

Mainline is out of my price range, but I'll probably get an Asgard 2 at some point because it's so flexible with different cans. And maybe the Crack too, since I don't plan going bigger than 650 in the forseeable future. Found out one of my friends is quite the DIY'er when it comes to electronics, and he told me he'll put the Crack together should I ever order one.

Price for BH Crack with Speedball package = $279 + $115 + $79 + $6 = $479 (not including the labour to build it up)

Price for Woo WA3 = $520

The prices are similar, but the WA3 definitely has a way better metal finishing and appearance. Now, how about the sound and synergy?
