It seems this ebayer only has 10k and 250k. Would it be better to just wait around until the 100k's appear?

I would just use the ebay seller contact feature and ask when they will have the100k' value ones in stock again.

Could anyone comment on how big\little of a difference there is between HD518\558\598 and the HD600\650? I'd like to get my feet wet with the Sennheiser sound and am simply curious whether the sound differences are subtle or are blatantly obvious. Charts on headroom look all too similar between all the previously mentioned models.

Would Sennheiser sound (or HD650s in particular) be a good match to someone who adores his PortaPros?  Thank you.

To a head-fier, I would say there is a very big difference between them. The 600/650s are in a league above the others. Whilst I'd be happy using the 518/558/598s straight from and iphone or computer, the 600/650s would benefit much more from a discrete DAC and amp. Keep in mind sound difference is not only in terms the frequency chart. So because two headphones share a similar curve does not mean one cannot have far better soundstage, instrument separation, overall speed, better decay etc.

And regards to your second question, if you want the exact same sound signature as the PortaPros, I don't think either the 600/650s will fit the bill. Perhaps a Grado maybe? Having said that, if you get the chance, do demo the 600/650s because they sound magnificent and you may just like them even more than the PortaPros.

Deals on the lower end Sennheisers that you mentioned can be found at slickdeals.net

If you like porta-pros you should enjoy either the HD600 or HD650.  Grado's have a spike in the treble - the Portapros have a more leveled treble.  I love the portapros from my Ipod with bass reduction.

The chassis and drivers of the entire HD598 class is a bit of a let down.  If the HD650 shows a tad of grain - those show much more.

@Bogatyr

HD598 is a better all around headphone than HD600/650. Depending on your music preferences, though, the 600/650 could be somewhat better. The HD598 doesn't sound bad on any genre.

Here's my review from a couple years ago that included the HD600 and HD598.

Also worth mentioning is that you can find used HD598s for much cheaper than the other two, nearly half the price usually.

Huh?  I won't touch that one, but I'll say that this may not be the right thread to post that comment. ;)

He asked in this thread how they compared, what other thread would you have me reply in?

I only meant that this is an appreciation thread for the 650. So making the statement that the 598 is better than the 650 make not make the best impression here.

Then it's a good thing I didn't simply say that.

It's all good. You can say whatever you like...respect. :D

Come on, Matt, Maxvla was providing his impressions on the HD650/598. Good or bad, it'll help somebody out there, thats trying to make the decision of what headphone to buy. Trying to shun negative impressions leads to uninformed buyers. Then, they might have wasted their money.

Not trying to single you out also, Matt, as this happens a lot.

You're are certainly right. BUT...my point is that this is an appreciation thread for the 650 and maybe not the best place to make claims about the 598 being a better all round hp.

He was trying to say that there are better all around headphones out there. Thing is, it sucks when you're the victim of stuff like this, as I was once(buying stuff that's been extremely hyped up, not making that claim of the 650 though). Anyways, back on topic.
