The HD6xx just have that relaxing warm sound. Good for general picture of the music, but lack microscopic detail for studio work and such IMO.

Ha! Well that's prolly why they all prefer the HD650...I did my job well to make them relaxed...high fives...second base here we go!

This afternoon I've spent with the Crack and 650 with a nice 5998.  I've heard lot's and lot's of high end hp's and gear. The ONLY time that I have been more jaw dropping impressed was at the Atlanta meet with the Stax 007 mkii on the blue Hawaii.

Good grief boys this is some incredible schiit. :beerchug:

So I decided to plug my HD 650 into my smartphone (Note 3) just for ****s and giggles, and I actually found the sound to be amazing. Well, okay, not amazing, but I expected an inaudible mess. I guess the "HD 650 sounds like pure filth without an amp" commotion I have read everywhere may just be a tad overblown.

What sort of mastering do you do in the studio?  Its always good to hear from a professionals opinion.  Still so much to learn.

Yeah, I remember when I had the HD650s with a SET amplifier - music never sounded more real to me at that point.  The HD650 with tubes can have an amazing tone for acoustic instruments.

The only thing a smart phone can't do is provide the necessary voltage to a 300ohm headphone for full dynamic range. Otherwise it will sound fine at the volumes it can manage. It's a little more complicated than that obviously but it's not the mess that some would have you believe.

Did anyone tried with Note 3 - - >USB audio output - - >Dragonfly 1.2 - - >HD 650?

I've been happy owner of HD650 for 7 months now. I'm using it with ORB Jade-1 and i love it!

Just wondering if it would be smart choice to switch to tube amp. Never had chance to try one

I've been thinking Woo Audio WA22, would that be overkill for HD650? Even though Jade is quite warm, i'm still looking a bit warmer one.

I just had a visit at my home by a very respected headfi member. I let him have a listen to the Crack and 650. He went through some of his favorite tracks, sat at moment pondering, and then said that the crack and 650 was one of the best matches he had ever heard and that it was better than the hd800 on many amps he'd heard it paired with.  Don't flame me.

He went on to say that the hd800 and a great amp was certainly better but that it takes too much money to chase that combo down. He said he'd prefer to own the crack and 650. When he left we were talking after market crack tubes, crack builders and other mods. I see the crack and 650 in his future.

Just rolled in the 5998 after spending the afternoon on the stock tube from bottlehead. In short, buy the 5998 and never look back. It's brilliant...also damned sexy. :o

My hd650 is in great company :) I wonder how this setup is vs a crack setup everyone is talking about ;)

The 5998 is rugged, too.  I have a backup 598 I bought a year ago.. but the original 5998 I've used regularly with the Crack (when I bought it a year ago) has run like an absolute champ.  My backup 5998 hasn't even been pulled out of the box to be tested!  I've used the Crack practically every week, if not every day, since I purchased it.. most all that time was with the 5998 rolled in... after many on/off cycles & listening sessions, it's not shown a single sign of physical (or sonic) degradation to this day.  I've found the 5998 to be more transparent than any 6080 I've rolled into the Crack (Bendix 6080/slotted graphite plates included).. but I haven't heard the Cetron/Tung Sol 7236.

I can't think of another headphone/amp combo that I've owned for as long as I have the Crack/650/600.. and not (eventually) had the desire to upgrade or move on from (out of sheer curiosity for something else).  On top of that, I haven't owned a combo that's remained as consistently alluring and captivating as the Crack/650 has after such sustained use.
