There has been tons of debate on the screen variances of the Sennheisers.  Sennheiser, in a press release, said that due to changes in pricing/availability a change was made to the driver baffle screen and the change is cosmetic only.  I have a pair of black screen HD580 as well as silver/white screen HD580s.  I've not been able to tell any difference in sound between them.

There could be other factors in your audio-signal chain contributing to the muddy vocals. Without digging into that line of discussion, I would suggest trying the HD650's in other sources/amps if possible. Also, I would take apart the headphones and make sure the drivers are clean and have no dust/hair on them.

The K701/Q701 are very different headphones.  I found the treble energy of the K701 somewhat fatiguing and the extremely lean bass I found unsatisfactory for much of what I like to listen to. If another headphone is what you are looking for, I'd suggest the Sennheiser HD600 as an alternative.

I very much appreciate your input as you own both versions of the baffle screen. I didn't attempt to take apart my HD650's as they are like new. Even the pads look new and the headphones are kept protected from dust.

I also sold my Q701 because of the thin sound, which worked beautifully with classical music, but not so much with 70s and 80s rock and pop music. It's just on some songs that the vocals seem muddy, with an excess of mid bass. With most of my music, they sound relaxed and natural. Also, I'm amping them with a Fiio E10, not a very powerful nor bright device, so that might be having an effect too.

But from what I read, maybe the HD600 would have been a better choice for me, yes.

Not necessarily.  I had a chance to listen to a HD650 driven by a Bottlehead Crack amp recently.  This is an amp that was designed to compliment the higher impedance headphones like the Sennheisers and to say that I was impressed with the pairing would be an understatement.

My old Hd650 was veiled and muffled too, but my current HD650 is awesome even with the stock cable.

Money-wise I could easily afford the 650's at the moment, but I'm afraid my fiance will kill me. I've been in the audio game only for less than a year, but already the itch to replace my 598's is too bad. Would my significant other notice if suddenly the color of my headphones would change from the creamy shades of 598 to the dark 650?

If she would be willing to metaphorically "kill" you over the 650s, then I think it's time you seriously consider breaking off the wedding. ;)

I expect your fiancée spends way more on having her hair and nails done over the course of a year than a pair of HD650's cost.

Is better to buy Modi + Magni or Modi + Vali?

If you're pairing with the 650, and I assume you are, then the Vali is the best pairing of those you mention IMO.

From what I've read so far, somebody said that Vali needs high quality DAC to really shine.

So Vali as AMP and Modi as DAC is good pairing? If so, I will buy it!

I have not had the Vali and modi together. I have the uberfrost and the pairing is quite good. I was never a big fan of the modi tbh. Maybe someone who has them both can chime in.
