I want to upgrade. My question is, what would be the most clever upgrade.

I was thinking about Magni + Modi / ODAC + amp / OTL Crack + high quality DAC.

The thing is I don't know if I upgrade the sound quality with Schiit stack or ODAC, but don't know if Crack will be worth my money ( for me ), either.

If it is possible, I would like you to write ( for example ):

With Fiio E10 - HD650 uses 20% of their potential, Schiit stack will be 80% and Crack will be 100%. So therefore it is best to upgrade to M+M Schiit stack.
Or Fiio E10 - HD650 uses 50% of ther potential, Schiit stack will be 60% - so it is not useful to upgrade.

Hope it does make a sense.

Thank you

I've heard that for the money, Vali should be an excellent amp for the 650's.

I've read mixed reactions on it. Some says it is treasure trove, other that it is bad for HD650.

And which DAC would you buy for it ?

Either Modi or ODAC will be fine as a DAC. And I'd definitely recommend the Crack as an amp or perhaps the Woo WA3 or WA6.

In my experience, you're not too far off.
E10=20%
M&M=60%
Modi/ODAC+Crack=90%

After this point, you're looking at diminishing returns. You'd probably be better off getting a better pair of headphones.

Did anyone else notice that someone posted a 1 star review of the HD650 yesterday and now its been taken down (I assume by an administrator)? :confused_face(1):

scolaiw: Do you think such "cheap" DAC will be enough? And which would you personally pick Modi or ODAC ( for sound quality for HD650 )?

PTom : Maybe he listened to it carefully after posting review and changed his opinion :D

Missed it.   Was the review legit or was it something like an Amazon review where the reviewers dog chewed on them for an hour then buried them in the back yard and after digging them out the cable was shorting-out from being chewed on and they sounded terrible from having dirt all in the drivers. Of course all this is poor product design and deserves a 1-star rating.

I checked his profile and the review is still a 1 star review but only administrators can access it.

It seemed legit from what I remember. It was short but I think his pros were "Good bass" and cons: " Darkest headphones I've ever heard". He's also posted on other threads discussing headphones in general so....

Yes, in this case, I do think it is enough. The 650s are very forgiving and both the Modi and ODAC perform exceptionally well at their price range. DAC technology is constantly getting better and it's not worth investing too much unless you will be investing in a much more expensive system. I personally preferred the Modi just slightly over the ODAC (when paired with the WA6), but to be perfectly honest, they perform almost identically to my ears.

And I don't think it was a well thought out review. His review isn't legitimate in that the score did not reflect his comments. Being the darkest headphone ever heard is not enough to warrant a score of 1 star. Would he give the LCD 3s a 0 then?

I don't think censorship is the answer. People should be allowed to decide on their own whether or not his review is "legitimate".

Although I don't agree with it, censorship is ubiquitous on this site. I myself have faced censorship on this site before. It's not like they aren't allowed to do it, since we agree to it when we sign up to the site.

Having said that, since the reviewer did not justify his score of 1, he's not doing himself any favours.

Most of the censorship on this site is directly related to their sponsors (I too have been censored here in the past), so of course they aren't going to allow half-assed, ill informed, and thoughtless reviews of certain products, regardless of how legit they may seem to the reviewer.

I've seen entire threads shut down because of one person talking badly about a certain company.

Were you planning on building the Crack yourself or buying one already built? I would absolutely get a Crack/Speed and a Modi, or a Bifrost Uber if you could afford it. I think a Crack/Speed and a Bifrost Uber is what I am going to get for my 'end game' setup. I have heard that set and I think you would have to spend a LOT of money to do better.

Ok everyone it was me, maybe I should have given 2-3 stars but this headphone really disappointed me to know end! I just don't understand why I can't enjoy detail and crisp clean highs at that price level. Now everyone has a different understanding on how they perceive sound, but this headphone just didn't cut it for my tastes, and especially at that price range. I apologize to anyone who thinks the world of the HD650, but for me it will just sit in a box forever in my basement. I love the HD600's very much and was expecting so much more with the newer model, but it just didn't do it for me. I am very willing to have discussions about my choice, but please don't bash me as I am very much in love with headphone audio and appreciate talking to nice people. Thanks so much.
