Budget of say up to $400 for this amp.

Thanks for the advice.

I have heard this amp with previous headphones, I liked it a lot, very transparent.

Not unlike the Tralucent T1.

So you believe that the c5 will have sufficient driving power? (again not for volume so much as control).

Thanks :)

I just could say I like the C5 better than the E12 for the HD650.

+1 for your budget.  I don't like Fiio house sound very much myself either.

I wouldn't be myself if I didn't offer the budget buster, and say consider the CEntrance HiFi-M8.  Its a dac/amp combo, and it has such great synergy with my HD650s.  Its so good, I'm anxious to put it up against the Crack, or any number of Schiit products.  The Crack, I assume, would win.  But this portable sure would give it a run for its money.....

Now the need for amplification is upon me.

If you can solder you can make an O2 for $50 + postage. Cost me, all up, $45 last year when AUD was stronger. (plus batteries/charger as required)

I also have this $77 (+ batteries) no name chinese battery amp which sounds really great with my HD650 (ignore the RSA nomenclature, it's not a clone, more of an homage, but way well use the same amplifier circuitry)

Edit: Started this before I saw $400 limit, I was going way lower :).

hi all... going along the lines of a portable dac/amp, what else goes well with the HD650? i got the cans a month ago but most my listening will be done out of a laptop. i have read the Meridien Explorer goes well. are the other options that pair well? was looking at an ALO Audio Island or iDSD but there aren't many reviews with HD650. i mostly listen to jazz, classic rock and classical.

get a 2ndhand Centrance DacportLX ;)

usb off your laptop, and it goes with u anywhere..

volume control is via the laptop.

clean clear sounding dac, powerful enuf for the hd650.

( i used it on the 600ohms Beyer 770 too...no problem )

the DacportLX is DAC only, right? it has enough power for 600ohms cans? that's pretty amazing.

Surely a 2volt dac couldn't sufficiently power the Hd650? They need 7 volts peak to peak for full dynamic range.

i used a mcAir, volume control thru Itune...out to dacportLX...to DT770/600, HD650 etc

Nothing anemic to my ears...n i do listen at quite loud vol.

Clueless about tech specs/matchg LOL

( on the Dt770/600ohms, the ITUNE vol was at MAX at my listening volume )

In your experience, how many hours are usually required for breaking of the HD650?

I received my 650's a month ago.  They probably have 100 hours on them at this point.  Not sure I would say they sound much different than they did at hour 2.  I think more than anything I've become accustom to their sound signature.  I thought they sounded great straight out of the box...I'm not a huge believer in the burn in process though.

The drivers won't change over time but the pads will soften up and change shape slightly, plus your brain will get used to the sound of the hd650 so this will seem like 'burn in'.
