I had a pleasant improvement in sound upgrading the cable on the HD650.  Now was it because of material improvement, or going from single end to balanced, or both?  Well, I'll never know for sure.

Matt likes to use the term "scale", and I think I'll use it too and say the HD650 scales well with cabling improvement.  I went with Brian at BTG Audio for my HD650 replacement cable, mainly because I wasn't willing to spend the cost of the headphones on a cable change.  That kind of money, in my opinion, should be spent on amps, dacs, and quality recordings...

If you're trying to stay in the Bottlehead realm of amps, the S.E.X. would be the way to go... @Loquah has done an excellent review of the S.E.X. (and compared it to the Crack).. the lower/adjustable impedance and higher current output of the S.E.X. makes it a great match for both high impedance dynamics and relatively efficient orthos (like the HE-400, HE-500, T50RP variants, etc.).  If you're not interested in shelling out bucks for the S.E.X., the Schiit Vali hybrid tube amp would be an excellent choice, too.

But for the 650 alone.. yeah, I'd say a speedballed Crack is heaven and considering the value, I can't think of a better amp for the 600/650/800.  Since my Speedballed Crack arrived (a year ago), I've had no desire to find another amp for the 650.  Yeah, when's the last time anyone that frequents this forum has even gone a year w/o looking to upgrade/sidegrade/drain their wallet on some newfangled amp?

Someone asked how the Vali stacks up to the Crack..

The Vali is a great amp with the 650 (and many other phones).. probably my second choice behind the Crack (for the 650).. but the Crack, IME, is a noticeable and worthwhile upgrade over the Vali.  As I've said before.. vs the Vali, a SB'ed Crack offers tighter, more impactful bass.. better dynamics.. a larger soundstage (width and height.. but especially depth).. and better instrument separation.  The Crack is a little more laid back sounding vs the Vali (which is relatively more upfront), too.

My opinion on the amps I've tried:

1. BH Crack with speedball 10/10 You just won't do any better in terms of pairing and getting the absolute best sound from the 650 or 600.

2. Schiit lyr 9/10 Drives the 650 nicely with good dynamics and the tubes give you the option to tweak the signature. If anything, the lyr seems a touch warm and will a bit of bottom end albeit just marginally. The lyr is tried and true and a safe bet.

3. Asgard 2 9/10 Not quite the same levels of dynamics as the lyr but more refined. Bass is tighter with slightly more texture. A bit more resolution on the top end. The A2 is a clean mostly neutral amp and it will work well if you're looking to "balance" the warmer nature of the 650.

4. Vali This is the little amp that could. Both dynamic and clean. Packs serious punch for such a small amp. Slightly warm but very close to neutral. Crazy good with a nice dac behind it. If you don't mind the microphonic issues during the warm up period, the Vali is hard to pass up at $120 8.5/10

Great write up!

Also, IMO:

5. Schiit Valhalla 9.5/10

^^ I have only heard the Valhalla briefly, so I don't comment on it. Thanks for adding it...

^^ It's just brighter than the Lyr and better pairs with the HD650, IMO.

So.. Just bought myself some HD650's. :)

Now the need for amplification is upon me.

I need an amp, preferably portable (battery so not 'transportable') that will power these things.

I dont need huge volume, however I want to tighten them up a bit :)

I dont have a fortune to spend at the moment, so this will be an inbetweener.

Any suggestions?

I will be searching this thread, however when I saw it was over 1000 pages long I thought I would pop in a message in tandem.

Thanks in advance

Scott

6. Mjolnir 11/10. I can do that right? smily_headphones1.gif

Heard the Magni, Vali, Valhalla, Mjolnir, and Crack w/ SB. I think the Mjolnir is the most neutral out of the bunch and has sledgehammer dynamics and a death grip on the drivers. I really enjoy the amp as a whole but my first impressions of it still linger, it's boring.

Might be why my HD 650 and 700 are getting a lot of head time compared to my HD 600 and 800.

^^ Dang, you've got the Senn lineup covered!! You are that the crack is boring?

Based on other reviews, I'd say you can't go wrong with the Schiit line. The Valhalla is the only amp I've tried from them, but they do appear to have some decent budget amps. Maybe get the Vali.

Yeah, strange addiction to Sennheiser. Not a bad thing.

Mjolnir is boringly flat, neutral, extended, dynamic and solid.

Crack is pleasant with a slight smoothing over effect and more plump than taught in the bassarea. Kinda like the HD 650 is.

I must say, it was a brief audition. Not a sit down with it for weeks thing, or months on end like I have with the Schiit.

I'm a fan of Bottlehead, I have an old Foreplay and a pair of 2A3 mono blocks I built.

The Crack, at its price point, which is half that of the Mjolnir, is most certainly a good choice.

+1  the Mjolnir is a fantastic amp, especially for the HD650 and LCD2/3, IMO

+2. Mjolnir is definitely an excellent pairing with HD650 if you want to lean the sound a bit more towards neutral with a superb soundstage.

TBH though, listening to the BHC Speedball that my friend built... it certainly wins out over the Schiit line in terms of "musicality" and providing synergy with the HD650 to give that euphonic tone. :D I may be tempted to get one yet to compliment the laser sharp focus of the Mjolnir.

Sorry, I'm a little confused.  Do you want battery power or no?

And what's your budget?  On head-fi, one person's in betweener is another person's end game...

Hi there, sorry, I want battery as I will be using this while away, in hotels and at work. Also because I will be carting it, form factor must be smaller than a common desktop amp.

Budget of say up to $400 for this amp.
