I have the HD650 but I'm so curious about the sound of the HD600. The only thing preventing me from at least "borrowing" one from amazon to test it out is that I can never imagine myself owning something that ugly... vs HD650's great curves and looks

The HD 600 and HD 650 are physically virtually identical except the paint job. But yeah, I've never been a big fan of the HD 600's speckled paint myself.

They both look the same if you're wearing them.

Hi! I'm expecting to get HD-650s for Christmas. Can't wait.  Anyway, I will be running them from a HRT microStreamer and hope to stall amp upgrade desires for as long as possible.  I'd like to get my hands on some replacement cables with a mini-jack for use with the microStreamer but they seem to be quite expensive.  I'm not really looking for an upgrade as much as just the convenience of not having to deal with an adapter all the time. Also, dealing with the adapter is going to make me think that I should be looking for a desktop amp, something I don't want to do.  If anyone has a line on any cables with minijack for south (way south preferably) of $80 I'd really like to hear about them.

Thanks!

What fun is xmas when you know what you get, lol ;)

I got a 1/4" TRS female to 1/8" TRS male adapter with HD 650 from Sennheiser, it was included in the case. May have changed since then, but it was a standard accessory with HD 650 earlier at least. It's pretty nice too, it has a pigtail so you don't put a lot of strain on the small female jack on your amp/pc.

TOO FUNNY!

Maybe somebody else has experienced this, I want to purchase some 650's, I was told that the newer models have silver drivers as apposed to black, great!

Went on Amazon (UK) and they are displaying the old models, also evident by the cables:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sennheiser-9969-HD650-Reference-Headphone/dp/B00018MSNI

Here on their official site one of three picture has silver driver, the other two are black:

Are they being that tight that they will not update their product shots??

With amazon surely they just haven updated the photo? I could email them but I know I won't get a definite answer as somebody would have to check...

Hi Jay

They look like the newer drivers to me, just checked against my own and its hard to see the silver colour clearly from some angles. Have a look in the pic below the one on the right is the new model note also the thicker plastic structure frame work used in the construction of the driver surrounds.

Edit just noticed what you said about the cable hmm wonder if some photo shopping or something has been going on with the amazon image?

I think they just haven't updated their images. Thanks.

When did the HD650 have a narrow cable like that and not the usual quick disconnect kind?

Thanks for they reply, Norway.  I decided that if I don't want to get the big amp then I should back off from the big headphones.  Looks like I'll be giving the 598s a try.

Well.. I've owned the HD650 for two weeks.. used it daily (so I sense it's pretty well conditioned by now).. and I'm in love with it.  There's few, if any, other full sized phones (I've owned) that I've looked so forward to using more than the 650... yes, the 650 slots above the HD800, HE-500, and HD600 in this respect.  The HD800 is something else.. an absolutely magnificent achievement.. but it was practically almost distracting in it's 'epic'-ness.  The 650 really feels like a blend of many of my favorite parts of the HD600, HD800, and HE-500.. so it's no wonder I seem to enjoy it so much.

I truly feel guilty to have avoided this phone due almost purely to public perception.  It's nothing short of stunning, in my book.  A/Bing it here with a loaned HD600, it's no contest which is the technically advanced phone.. and more importantly, the one I find more pleasing (the HD650).  I still love and appreciate the HD600, but I simply can't go back to listening to it after spending as much time as I have with the HD650.  It sounds downright grainy and unrefined, in comparison.  Even though the HD600 is a little brighter, I'll take the more composed, more articulate, better detailed treble presentation of the HD650 any day of the week.  In addition to the very noticeable increase in refinement over the HD600, the 650's excels in resolving ability, dynamics, and most importantly, stage depth (which, IMO, is the HD600's biggest weakness).  To my ears, the 650 possesses a degree of elegance and delicacy that the 600 lacks.  Much of this is evident when the 650, which IMO, is a little more amp specific than the HD600, is paired with excellent upstream gear.  I think the 600 gets some of it's appeal no only for it's brighter upper mid/treble response, but also cause it's less demanding of well matched upstream gear.  That isn't to say the 600 doesn't scale well (it does).. but the 650 possesses a little more magic to my ears when it's paired with great upstream gear.

Seeing the error in my ways of letting public opinion to sway me away from the 650, I decided to buy the only other popular phone that I've avoided for the same reason: the LCD-2r2.  Hearing that it's the natural upgrade to the HD650 certainly makes it an easy buy for me too.  I'm excited to hear it and see how it stacks up to the HD650.  Regardless of how I find it, I can't see myself letting go of the HD650.  It simply sounds too impressive (and addictive) off my BH Crack.  There may be better phones than the HD650.. and better amps than the BH Crack.. but this combo could go toe to toe w/ practically anything I've heard.. when it comes to sheer enjoyment and immersion.

I shall report back on how the LCD-2 stacks up to the HD650 when it arrives!

Yeah, the HD650 is a great workhorse. The HD800 is on a whole other level but my HD650 gets just as much head-time.

I've owned the LCD-2.2 alongside the HD650 on two separate occasions. The Audez'e (as good as it is) could never pull me away from the HD650. It's a side-grade IMO and I couldn't justify owning both. The HD650 won out. Both times.
