A little off topic but has anyone tried listening with vintage amps/receiver?  Sansui/Marantz/Pioneer?  If so, what would pair the hd650's up with for your taste?

Whatever I get will be driven by a Lyr, primarily, and a JDS Labs C5, occasionally.  Either amp could use the HiFimeDIY U2 Sabre DAC or the Bifrost Uber I'll be getting soon, but it'll mostly be Lyr+Bifrost, then C5+U2 Sabre.  99% will be FLACs, some hi-res.

I've got a decent collection of tubes for the Lyr, so I can vary the sound as needed.

So my question(s) for you are, will the Lyr+Bifrost combo be as good as I'm imagining it with the 650s?  I've read they scale up nicely.  I don't listen to much that's too frenetic; no death metal or fast punk, so I'm not worried about the 650s being able to keep up.  It's mostly classic and indie rock:

Rush, Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Neil Young, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Van Morrison, Creedence, Roxy Music, Steely Dan, VU, Peter Gabriel, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Flaming Lips, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., Robert Pollard (all incarnations), Darker My Love, Jesus and Mary Chain, Poster Children (greatest band you've never heard of...?), British Sea Power, The Bevis Frond (2nd greatest...?), Camper Van Beethoven, Robyn Hitchcock, Stereolab, Built To Spill, Elvis Costello, Luna, Paul K (3rd greatest...?), Pavement, Spiritualized, zengomi (my brother ;-), et alia.

The HE-500s are likely to remain my main cans, so I'm happy to switch as needed.

Is there any point in getting some Senns, particularly the 650s, given all of above?  Demoing is not an option.  A used pair is, hopefully.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

As other people here have replied: long story short, YES!

I have the setup you're describing right now, Bifrost Uber -> Lyr w/ Amperex OGs -> HD650 and HE500. The Lyr drives the HD650 with near infinite headroom lol, absolutely lacking in nothing except soundstage from a balanced system. The tonality is quite dependent on the tubes, but seeing as you have some to roll around with already, you should be fine. Back to the HD650...

... its quite magical, though some people need to get used to the warm signature of the HD650... but once you do.... that smooth sultry sound does make virtually any song sound sweet. Quite a nice compliment to a HE-500 where its so much quicker and neutral.

You really cannot go wrong with the HD650!

Thanks for the reply.  Y'all have sold me on them.  Not sure when I'll get them, within the next month or so, I'd guess (sooner would be better :-)

Yeah, I've got some nice '67 OGs, and '61 BB Straight Mans/Men... I just call 'em the Heteros :D  plus some very sweet '66 RTC E188CCs (Heerlen vintage)... those three seem like they might match up well with the 650s.  I think my sleeping pill would be the Matsu****as + HD 650s.  Kevin from Upscale says, re: those tubes, "break out the bong," but to me this combo sounds like sonic Xanax.  OK, so not a likely combo in the long run, but just once it must be tried.  I've also got some 1974 Voskhod Rockets inbound (4 of 'em, so I should be able to get at least one good pair).  Some people rave about those tubes, and from their descriptions, the 650s might open up nicely.

I'm glad you mentioned the HE-500 as a nice complement to the 650s.  That gives me some confidence that I'm making a worthwhile addition to the stable.  If I like the 650s as much as you do, and I'd hazard a guess that I will, then those two cans alone should hold me for a while.  I want the warm and sultry option, and if you look at my sig, you'll note the lack thereof.

Do you use the stock cable?  nwavguy says it's fine.  I won't be getting a custom cable straight away, if at all, but I'm curious if people think it helps, and if so, which are y'all using?  I love my HFM cable from plusSounds.  Glad I got that.

Thanks again for the thoughts and encouragement!

That's quite a stable of tubes! I have a pair of halo getter OGs, and a pair of A-frame OGs, 2 pairs of matsus, stock JJs, and Russian 6N1Ps. The HD650s definitely respond well with the change in tubes, though I found the Matsu's to be the weirdest of the bunch, it had a fairly flat response, but suddenly drops off at the lows and the highs, but sound a lot better with the HE-500s.

I had the black dragon cable for the HD650 for while, but I sold it, so I'm running stock right now. No real qualms with it, but the black dragon really did give it that extra high end sparkle and low end extension. If you have money itching to be burned, the cable is the last thing I'd upgrade. It does make a difference, but not enough to justify the cost.

Hope that helps!

I love me some glass :-)  That's pretty much my take on the Matsus.  Not bad for the price, suitable for certain cans.  They work nicely with Q701s.

Helps a lot.  Telefunken E88CCs before cable.  Thanks again.

Blue Dragon also great with HD650 to deep bass a little bit and remove harshness from treble while keeping sparkle and details

hi guys, i'm planning to buy a new headphone and hd650 is one of those in my list, wanna ask does upgrading the cable does a significant job on hd650, which means it can only sounds so good with those upgrade cable? Because at the moment i just want to buy the headphone alone since i already have 2 amp (alo mk3 b+ & rsa sr-71b) and run from my fiio x3 / rwak-120b, my main question is can hd650 run well from my current rig? i'm also planning to buy a centrace dacport so that when i listen to music using my laptop, i can get better quality than just directly from the headphone jack (does hd650 run well with centrance dacport)

The cable should be last on your upgrade list.

harshness from treble!? That is interesting. The only harshness I experience with the HD650 is when it sometimes pulls out a hair on the sides of my head where the cups swivel a little.

i used and listened to some  cables on the HD650 - the  stock , cardas , mobius , silver dragon , RAL , and SAA Equinox .

i ended up with the SAA equinox as it has the best balance of mid , high and low and it gives it better low end . the silver cables are not bad - makes the highs amped up and more detailed but the sound is a bit lean .

I can't speak for the HD650 but I did upgrade the cable on my HD580 to the stock HD650 cable. It did make everything a bit more refined. It wasn't life altering but it was a nice slight refinement for about $30 bucks. (6 years ago)

Now would I spend $300+ on a high end cable today? Yes . . . but only if I had my end-game DAC and amp, and I had money to blow on a comparatively small improvement.

TL:DR Spend your money on everything else first, then the cable.

Exactly

Also I'm not sure if harshness is right word but recordings with too high level don't sound smooth and clean and with Blue Dragon this not longer the case with most recordings. Try to use EQ instead you can say but you will lose details too then

+1 for cable upgrade being last. Though to my ears, there are benefits to be had.

HD650 and a pile of SCHIIT (Asgard 2/Bifrost Uber) does the job for me.    As far as cables?  Depending on what cables you buy, well known and high quality cables DOES make a difference as far as clarity and details.

If you hadn't heard any better, stock is good enough...

Someone is having a lot of fun with me now. I got a notice late last night from ups that a delivery was coming today from BBY/Sennheiser. Sweet! Until the tracking this morning said "Exception: Transportation accident occurred." That's a first in all my years of online buying. They were headed from Chicago to Detroit and looks like they took the entire load back to Chicago now.

On a side note I had ordered a Dragonfly and have been going back and forth on keeping it or not. At this point I think I will keep it and use it exclusively and then use it as a DAC when I can get an amp. Does this sound like a decent plan? I also have 3 AV receivers I can try these cans on; an older onkyo tx-ds595, an newer onkyo ht-rc260 and a denon 4311. Hopefully all of these will be enough to determine what I think of the HD650.
