It all depends what gear you pairing it with and which tubes you use if you have a tube amp with rolling capability. I currently pairing m HD700 with Crack with Speedball and while using 5998 output tube I thought exactly same way but as soon as I replaced it with Winged C 6H13C, while waiting for arrival of some other tubes to try, I don't have that problem anymore. But since everyone hears differently your experience may vary, I just adding my 2c

Edit - it appears that it might be a power problem, the ports are my monitors definitely do not have enough juice to power the DAC... Is this something that can be fit? All these cables are killing me! :( I do not want to be plugged in from the front of my desktop (the 4 ports are the back are occupied for the monitor, external hard drive and keyboard/mouse... All I have are the two front ports that are free..

Dont do that, plug the ODAC directly into the back of your pc.  The power supply in monitors is especially noisy too, to the extent i have my monitors USB hub disconnected from the pc.

^ This. Your DAC will be more sensitive to power and signal quality than any of your other peripherals so you want to use the best possible port for it. Plug it into the back of your PC in one of its on-board USB ports. Move whatever was plugged into that port to your monitor's USB hub. For example you could connect your keyboard to the monitor and use the keyboard's port for your DAC.

The hd700 is a great set of cans. i went to a meet and had my trusty hd650's and someone gave me there hd700's for a couple of hours. I was there auditioning amps and dacs to purchase for myself to pair with the hd650's and to be honest I spent more time listening to the hd700's instead of my intended purpose. I don't know why but I actually prefered it over the hd800. Go figure

Was you able to try HD800 with WA7 or Crack with Speedball? Right now I trying HD700 with WA7 and Crack and with Crack I clearly prefer HD800 over HD700 while with WA7 I have recordings which I'm enjoying with HD800 over HD700 while others I enjoy with either one

Thanks, I now have the ODAC plugged into the motherboard directly and have moved the peripherals to my monitor now! All is working fine and dandy... I just need a longer USB cable now so the ODAC can sit on my amp close to the middle of my desk! :)

That's why I would recommend to get used one or on sale from ttvj and try with tube amp so that you can hear for yourself better details and wider soundstage when compared to HD650

It is worth the drive...I drove 5 1/2 hours for my HD800's! I had to try them before I bought them. Now I hate to take them off...:D

HD650 will sounds through all spectrum compare to HD700 no matter whatset up I have tried. Whether we like it or not of course back to our own preference. I never wrote thinner means worse or something like that smily_headphones1.gif

I also has found some persons here that prefer the 700 than the 800, but that's story for the other thread smily_headphones1.gif

Well, I had to go ahead and go with the 598s as they dropped to $199 new on Amazon this AM and I couldn't pass it up :-) Right at the price point I already had set aside and would require no additional amp purchase to properly power (currently have Fiio E17). I've heard good things about these and if they're anything like the 590s I've heard then they'll be perfect. I'm sure the upgrade itch with strike sooner or later and 650s may be in my future still. Thanks again for the insight guys.

Why would you build one? There are plenty of headphone stands to be had on Amazon.
