Sennheiser HD650 Impressions Thread - Page 878

My 650's are going away for good on monday.  And I'm a little sad.  But they are going to a friend of 25 years.  He asked me about headphones and i responded with questions about where and how he plans to use them.  Ended up offering him my 650's for cheap that have been neglected since i got LCD2's.

my only worry is powering them.  Do you think they'd work out of Macbook Pro/iphone/yamaha reciever?

i figure the yamaha will be fine.

as ive used them with a vintage marantz for years.

but the iphone and laptop i just don't know.  i told him he can send them back if it doesn't work out.

point him to this thread n he will know he has not been shortchanged...

He'll really need to invest in an amp/DAC... but since you let him get them cheap, he could easily pick up a more budget solution to power them. (Mag/Modi, E09K/E07/E17, O2 ODAC, etc.)

I'm sure the ole' Yamaha will do him fine to start, but he'll need to save up for something else to drive them...

I'd recommend the Yulong A800. You can get them for $135 from ebay now. It's a really good budget amp for the HD650. I prefer it over the O2, E09K and Magni w/ the HD650. Quite good synergy and improves as you upgrade source.

FYI, I got my cable from them but haven't had the chance to listen to them yet.

I just picked up an Enigma-Audio Oracle2 S from another head-fi member for $120, well committed to buy anyway... lol

Pretty much exactly what I was looking for.

The SL has improved the HD650 greatly, the soundstage is better, its faster, more revealing, and more seducing. Time to get a better amp I guess..

Ah, right. Should've put Burson Soloist SLtongue_smile.gif

Yeah, I like my Soloist with the HD650... it's very clean sounding.  I'll go back and forth between the Soloist and the Crack+Speedball depending on what I'm listening to.  I've stated this analogy before, but I see the Soloist like SACD/DVD-A and the Crack+Speedball like vinyl... one is cleaner, more precise and very detailed... the other sounds more lush and warm.

You definitely have to get through the whole clicking of the stepper attenuator (which I don't think you have on the Soloist SL), but I love having the preamp out and the three inputs.  The preamp out is running to my Audioengine A2 speakers and the three inputs are to my DAC, a Roku and a Blu Ray player.  Combine that with a 24" inch Dell monitor that does HDMI in (and an HDMI splitter for the multiple connections), and it allows for a nice personal entertainment setup.

Nah, the SL doesn't have a stepped attentuator. I'll have to see which I prefer, I think with the HD650, I'll like the Crack better.

What advantages do the Lyr and Crack posses with the HD650?

Nevermind my above question, Crack + Speedball was purchased!
