By my estimates it's about 20% better than the Bifrost and about 98% more transparent than the original ODAC.

And about 35% better than the old Altavista chipset. Still not as good as the Lycos though!

Just pull the trigger on the Crack. You won't regret it. The Lyr is good with the HD 650 but the Crack is *excellent*. Next level stuff IMO. I don't think there's anything under $500 that can touch it really.

One of Glenn's OTL amps. There $500. Multiple accounts of people saying it sounded a lot better with the HD650, they have also tried the Crack. Hit up Glenns thread. He built the amp just for the HD650 in mind, but sounds great with a bunch of other headphones.

A suggestionwink.gif His famed OTL amp is $500 + shipping. I have not tried his OTL amp to be clear. I know people hate when other people do this. But I couldn't sit on the sidelines without recommending it to you to give it a little research..

Haven't had the pleasure of hearing any of Glenn's stuff, but the Crack (especially with Speedball) is a tried-and-true bang-up match for the HD 600/650, and if you build it yourself the cost is south of $400.

Besides, there are multiple accounts of people saying that X is better than Y all over Head-Fi... biggrin.gif

Exactly why I posted the inquiry. Thanks, I'll look into it.

Well, I paid $500 for my Decware CSP2+ and the guy threw in a beefed up power cord that sells for $179 new.  I know my CSP2+ outright smokes the Crack (pun intended) and everything else I've heard with the HD650.  I've never again (or before) seen the CSP2+ for < $500, so it doesn't really count.  I do personally prefer the Valhalla to the Crack, but I've only heard a fairly straight ahead build of the Crack (+ Speedball).  It's certainly possible with some design modifications, parts choices, and the right tubes the Crack could best the Valhalla or other sub-$500 amps.  In that case and factoring in your labor, the Crack would really be a sub $500 amp either.

If it helps, I believe sennheiser demos the 650s in the UK with the Graham Slee Solo... I have it and love it. It isn't tubes though and you all seem to love your tubes...smily_headphones1.gif
Not sure about US cost though

Blimey! Its £377 on Amazon (standard PSU). I guess the exchange rate and shipping has put a spanner in that one... :O

I was just listening to some QOTSA on mine tonight and I noticed that I was hearing some sort of static squeak on a couple of the songs... I thought my cable might be damaged or my amp was doing something weird, but it kept playing at the same spot, so I think it's just an error in the recording. For a laid-back headphone, these sure do bring out a lot of little details...

x2.  I've done the rounds at CanJam with a pair of 650's, and the crack is simply a top shelf contender with these phones, especially with the right tubes in it.  Building the kit is also really interesting and satisfying, while simultaneously providing valuable insight into this hobby.

Calipilot - the main crack thread and http://www.head-fi.org/t/641851/diy-bottlehead-crack-vs-schiit-lyr-advice are also worth a look as you ponder this decision.

It's a toss up IMO. It might just come down to price and what you're willing to pay. I've heard several accounts of people saying they prefer the Crack to the CSP2+, I've heard accounts of people selling their WA2 because they prefer the Crack. I've also heard things happen the other way around. It's personal preference and it may come down to how much it costs and how much you can spend. Another tube amp that is commonly spoken of in the same sentence as the HD650 is the La Figgaro 339, it's been pretty well received around these parts and also on Headfonia.

Crack, CSP2+, WA2, LF339. I'm sure you'll be pretty happy with any one of these.

Crack it is, speedball or not will depend on the size of my next paycheck. Just wanted to make sure I hadn't overlooked anything.
